'Obtaining IP' from HG612 3B
« on: December 05, 2021, 01:40:16 PM »

So I've had an unlocked HG612 3B (SP08 firmware) working with a Draytek 2860 for a while with no problems.  Recently, I got hold of a Ubiquiti Dream Router.  When I remove the Draytek and connect the Ubiquiti to the LAN 1 connection of the HG612, it just sits at "Connected - Obtaining IP".

If I plug the Draytek back in and connect the Ubiquiti to a spare port on the Draytek, it works fine, but obviously I don't want a router plugged in to another router.

Although my computing knowledge is pretty good, my networking isn't so much.  Is there something I need to be setting on the GUI for the HG612 to allow the Ubiquiti to connect correctly?  I feel this is more a HG612 settings issue rather than a Ubiquiti issue.

I also don't know if I need to give more information, so I will try to answer what I can.

Thanks

Have you rebooted the hg612?

Have you put your DSL username and password in to the Ubiquiti?

I feel this is more a HG612 settings issue rather than a Ubiquiti issue.

Considering the HG612 is preconfigured then it really shouldn't be.
It doesn't need a single setting changed.
If in doubt reset the HG612 to factory defaults (it will remain unlocked).

Most likely an issue authenticating with the ISP which will be the Ubiquiti.

Have you rebooted the hg612?

I actually went through the firmware installation again, but yes, have also rebooted.

Have you put your DSL username and password in to the Ubiquiti?

I can't even get through the setup on the mobie app far enough to get a settings page, it needs to get past 'Obtaining IP' before it will let me go further.

That's good to know, thank you.  Maybe if I setup the Ubiquiti via another router first (as it does seem to work using that method), then investigate the settings of the Ubiquiti in more depth, doesn't seem like that's how it should work, but it may get me further along.

The default IP for the HG612 is 192.168.1.1
I know nothing about Ubiquiti routers but is it possible that it has the same IP address and needs to be changed.

[Moderator edit: Typo fix. (HG512 --> HG612).]

Who is your ISP?

The UDM is set to connect to the internet using DHCP by default - you'll probably need to change it to use PPPoE, and then as others have said, type in a username and password specific to your ISP.

It appears that this is not possible via the initial setup process - this thread describes how to do it:

from r/Ubiquiti

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/j0pdof/dream_machine_pppoe_setup/

Which if I understand correctly, means putting your old router back, and then doing a first-time setup with the UDM's WAN port connected to one of the LAN ports on your old router.  You can then configure the PPP settings on your UDM, and replace your old router with it.

So yeah, the UDR works the same way as the UDM. I did have to go through setup while connecting to the old router, and yes, it was not configured for PPPoE, so once that was changed it was fine.

Thanks all for the help.
