Amazon and UK VISA Credit Cards
« on: November 17, 2021, 09:59:19 AM »

I found out today that Amazon will not be accepting any VISA Credit cards registered in the UK for payment starting 19th January 2022. I am most unhappy about this since using a credit card for large payments gives much better protection. The will accept Visa Debit cards though. Apparently this is a spat between VISA and Amazon over the high charges on these cards. I certainly will not be applying for any other credit cards just to please them. I've had a VISA Credit card since Barclays first issued their Barclaycard yeas ago! I suppose if VISA give in and reduce their charges Amazon might allow them again but some how I doubt it.

Well done Amazon, that basically means I wont be able to make any large value purchases on Amazon any more.

I see they accept American Express, which always used to have the highest charges by far. But maybe that's changed?

Likewise, I'll buy low value items I cannot get anywhere else at a lower price using my debit card but nothing of significant value, I'll also reconsider my Prime account. We took out a Prime account during lockdown as we found we were buying quite a lot of stuff form them but now it's a different consideration.

Just bought an item from Amazon. They offered me £10 if I registered a backup card to my Visa credit card. Which I did and they gave me the £10 as a 'promotional balance'. Used it immediately to get £10 off the item I was buying. £10 per Visa credit card user, that could cost them rather a lot. Maybe this offer won't last that long...

Amazon process card payments in Luxembourg so incur some insane charges from Visa. The UK was protected from these before it left the EEA but after this game on.

American Express seem to have stuck to the EEA charges for the UK so far. Think this is another roaming charges, etc, thing.

Guess I'll have to go back to using my Mastercard with Amazon.

Best I register my Mastercard ASAP as they offered me £20 discount  :)

Amazon emailed folks with Visa credit cards as their default card.

Both my cards are Mastercard (Tesco and Sainsburys) so I'm not affected. The points for every £1 spent on them usually pays for the extra shopping in the run up to Xmas (if not already used for something else).

This only affects Visa credit cards.
Visa debit and visa electron will continue to work on Amazon.

I'll survive. I'm sure Amazon will also.

Yes, the other half has said Amazon can go screw themselves, will just purchase elsewhere.

Got my £20 voucher, can't complain at free money off my next order. It was only a few months ago I changed my registered card  with Amazon to a Visa credit card from a Mastercard, purely because the issuing bank had altered its transaction downloads, but its no real hard ship for me as I have both anyway.
