Service Provider Firebrick Devices
« on: October 30, 2021, 03:55:52 PM »

[This post and those that follow have been split off from the IP over PPP LCP topic, as requested.]

The current one has 2 gigabit ports only, and they've racks of them at their POPs.  :)

That will be the FB6000 series which, I see, is no longer available to purchase. Have you heard any whispers regarding their replacements?

The 9000? It's late to market. No idea why.

The FB9000 was apparently due in the first half of 2021...

It's reported to have 2 10Gbits/s SFP ports and 8 1GBits/s SFP ports.

The FB6000 it's replacing has two 1GBits/s ports.

Someone from AAISP commented on their IRC channel (in August 2020) that the FB9000 would reduce the number of Firebricks AAISP have in their datacentre from 20 down to about 4.

RevK also commented on his blog (in Feb 2021) that they would soon have an FB9000 prototype at the other end of his home fibre connection.

So there has been some slippage. It will be interesting to know when the FB9000 finally becomes available.

I would love to know about the hardware and software. I might ask them, and even sign an NDA if need be.

Considering the component shortage, I don't think its hard to guess.

Revk popped up in AAISP IRC channel earlier tonight, and was asked about the Firebricks.

"The good news is the Fb9000 look to be doing the performance we want. The bad news is making an actual sellable product takes forever when there is a global chip shortage.  But good news is A&A do not need to wait for production fb9000 to be using them, and when we have some, we can upgrade the services we offer to higher speeds. Soon"

He also mentioned other new models on the horizon:

"The FB3100 to succeed the FB2900 with multi gigabit throughput and maybe a 10G SFP. The FB12000 to be multi 10 or 40G links. Both of those are a bit blue sky for now.  But the chip sets look awesome.  I am keen to "pipeline" the next gen on this ASAP as we end up behind the times.  All same code.  All ARM based"

I wonder about hardware assist? External hardware is needed now even with fast processors?

No need for an ASIC for the packet pushing. Some ARM CPU cores would be fine.
