What are the "tuning forks" (stroboscopes) used for, some sort of frequency standard?
I never saw them or used them in anger, but they were to ensure the 'ringer generators' were operating at 75Hz.
Ahh, thought they looked like large tuning forks.Had to check that 75 Hz was within the human audible range which of course it is.I imagine the 75 Hz AC ringing signal would have been electro-mechanical generated in the old Stowger exchanges and there would have been some form of speed control on the generating unit motor to trim the frequency.
There's a few old sweats on here . . .
