Testing phone line/internet.
« on: August 21, 2021, 11:16:07 PM »

Hi.
I remember being told that you could test your condition with a telephone and if you hear static or noise this would indicate a fault or problematic line.
Is this correct?
If not is there a reliable way to test it.
I'm sorry for my noob like questions i really don't know much.

Many thanks.

Yes, there is a service provided by making a (free) call to 17070. Listen to the menu offered and select either "quiet line" or "ring back", as appropriate.

If your telephony service is via a LLU provider (e.g. TalkTalk), you will only hear the announcement of the number associated with the line. To perform either a "quiet line" test or a "ring back", you would need to make a (chargeable) call to 020 87599036.

From my notes, this is what you would hear --

"This circuit is defined as nnnnnnnnnnn.

Welcome to your Openreach line test facilities.

Press
  • for ring back.
  • for quiet line.
  • for fast test.
  • for fast cleanse.
or clear down."

Yes, that's what you would use.

But it will do you no good, as you are not an Openreach employee with a HHT.
