Something Happened!
« on: August 21, 2021, 01:33:41 AM »

Just after 1500 hours, yesterday, (Friday, 20th August 2021) both my telephony and Internet access ceased to operate. After a few minutes, both returned. Upon checking (17070), I still had the correct telephone number. A harvest of the circuit's xDSL data was made and the four usual snapshot plots were produced.

Attached, below, are a montage of the four snapshot plots from the beginning of August and a montage of the four snapshot plots from after Friday's event. b*cat did not request it . . .

That's certainly unexpected, somewhat alarming if you didn't have a modem/router capable of supporting it as you would have been left with no service.

A bit worrying that your Broadband connection type changed with no prior warning from your ISP.  :o

You appear to have a good range of tones in use, albeit with low bit loading at the high end. Hlog looks very smooth. What are the VDSL2 lines stats telling you?

As Alex has already mentioned, its a good job your modem is compatible.

It will be interesting what the ISP says...  and I trust there will be no increase in subscription costs nor changes to any contract.

Wonder if it could have been a mistake by an OR engineer at your PCP attempting to carry out a legitimate, requested ADSL to VDSL migration on another subscriber, has been known?
Will certainly be interesting to hear what your ISP has to say.

On the positive side, you have had a free sneak preview of VDSL service on your line!

That's a very usable looking VDSL connection that you didn't ask for!
As asked by others, what are the line stats like?
I expect that somewhere in your near vicinity someone is complaining that their new connection doesn't seem to be working...

There is more to the story . . .

It was a Thursday, either late last month or very early this month, when I settled down at the computer, around mid-day, and checked the new e-mail messages in chronological order of arrival. There was one message from Yodel (timed around 0900 hours) telling me that "my order from TalkTalk would be delivered later that day". As I never trust Yodel and as I had no order from TalkTalk to be delivered, the message was ignored. Some more e-mail messages further on and the was another message from Yodel; they had tried to deliver my TalkTalk order at around 1115 hours but "I was not at home". Utter hog-wash, no one had approached my front door and I was at home. And I was not going to left-click on the links in either of those two dubious messages.

The next day, Friday, I discovered another pair of Yodel messages with similar timings as the above and stating the same nonsense. I gave them one of my best black-looks.

On Saturday, I received another e-mail message from Yodel asking me to left-click on the link "to rearrange the delivery of my TalkTalk order".  >:(  Obviously I did nothing.

On the following Monday morning, there was a knock on my door. Upon opening the door, I saw a package on the exterior mat and a Yodel person retreating to his vehicle. The packaging was TalkTalk branded and stated that it was my new "superdooperrouter" or some such nonsense. Rather than sticking the package in a bucket full of water and calling for the bomb-squad, I carefully opened it. The piece of paper, masquerading as a "letter" told me that I must be using the very old "router" they originally supplied as they "can't tell what it is that I have connected to the line". It continued to say that I won't be charged for it and all I need to do is connect it "and they will do the rest". They must think that b*cat is some naive numpty. Under no circumstance will I use it. The box was put to one side.

Later in that week, I decided to physically examine the device. It is a D-Link DSL-3782 device . . . I will never use any D-Link device. It has TalkTalk firmware installed and is configured to use TR-069. No, no and no. Upon opening it up, I could see that it uses a pair of MediaTek ICs, a SoC and a wireless controller. No, no and no. Utter junk that cost TalkTalk all of £1-37 per unit when purchased in bulk!

A week later, I received an e-mail message from TalkTalk to say that they are "sending me their superdooperrouter, free of charge" and when it arrives, just plug it in and they will do the rest. Then a physical paper letter, in a paper envelope, arrived saying exactly the same thing.

A further week passed and I received yet another TalkTalk e-mail message saying that if I don't use the "superdooperrouter" that they have provided, at no cost to me, my Internet service may be disrupted. My response was to change the credentials for my existing ADSL2 service to send the string "No_TalkTalk_Back_Door" as both the login and the pass-phrase. It was about then that I wondered if they were going to upgrade me to a VDSL2 service . . .

A most helpful consultation with broadstairs provided the relevant configuration for a TalkTalk VDSL2 service when using a ZyXEL device. And so I waited. Last Monday I received yet another TalkTalk e-mail message to say that the "superdooperrouter" still hadn't been connected and when the upgrade to my service occurs on Friday (i.e. yesterday), I will loose my Internet connection.

The rest you know . . .  :)  ;)  :D

So, it looks like TT were not sure if your in use modem was capable of connecting on VDSL service and had decided without any consultation that your line should be migrated from ADSL to VDSL service!

Completely understand your reluctance to respond to the couriers e-mails, there are so many similar scams on the go.

Will still be interesting to see what TT have to say assuming you get to talk to a human at some stage?

Just enjoy the new speed, no point trying to talk to TT.

One of my brothers customers was recently upgraded FOC from ADSL to VDSL, no idea who the ISP is though.

Perhaps there is now a push to get people off of ADSL, wonder if one of my other brothers who's on ADSL will get a free upgrade, I think he is with TT.

In the last 12 months or so two of my friends on BT ADSL were advised that their service would shortly be transferred to FTTC, and a modem-router (Hub 6 IIRC) would be posted in readiness for the switch. It appeared to be a fait accompli.

As they were both some distance from the exchange, but not far from the cab, and there was no increase in rental, they were very pleased with  the outcome.

From your stat's looks like your line will support fairly reasonable VDSL 40/10 provision.
I'am assuming you are served by a Huawei DSLAM judging by the visable DS G.Inp parameters?
Line is on DS G.Inp re-tx low profile which is a bonus, however, this may well change to high profile as DS SNRM migrates towards 3dB in 1dB steps as per expectation on a Huawei DSLAM.

Its honestly about time they did this, where possible.  But its obviously complicated if the local cab is full or if some customers at the exchange are too far from the cabinet.

The question is, what if they migrate someone and it turns out the estimates were wrong and they CAN'T get sync from VDSL?

From your stat's looks like your line will support fairly reasonable VDSL 40/10 provision.

I read it as a provision of the Openreach 40/10 Mbps product.

I'am assuming you are served by a Huawei DSLAM . . .

Looking via Google Street View it is possible to see a large (unexpanded) Huawei equipped cabinet to the right of the PCP and the PCP has extensions at either end. The right hand pod is supplying G.Fast circuits.

Edited to add: EABSE P28, located at IP26 6AT (to save unnecessary searching).

Quote
. . . as DS SNRM migrates towards 3dB in 1dB steps as per expectation on a Huawei DSLAM.

I don't expect that to happen as I already have excess SNR headroom on both DS & US and I'm hitting "the (upper limit) buffers" of the 40/10 Mbps product.
