I think I trust Hauwei more than Amazon for router security.

TalkTalk first major ISP to offer Amazon's Eero 6

Seeing as the Eero can't do PPP, Talktalk may be the only OpenReach ISP to ever supply it.

I'm currently trying to blag 1 from Talktalk.
My 550/75 service goes live on Thursday.

I just received an email about this from talktalk saying if you use this with any other ISP they will remotely brick it.

This does not sound like a very good thing at all that this is even possible with a router.

Is there anyway to install a custom firmware onto it to prevent them this ability (I actually would be using it with TalkTalk hence how I got it iin the first place, but I do not like this big brother is monitoring you ready to cut you off idea at all).

Every eero also has OpenWrt compatibility. Use the USB port to quickly switch to running OpenWrt. We believe that you should have the freedom to do anything on the hardware. If simple setup and automatic configuration isn't your style, do your own thing on our awesome 802.11ac hardware. It has the guts you need.
any chance of a snippet of the email with personal information removed?

Here it is here uploaded to an image host. I have added the lines to the scary part. Its also repeated in the black TOS section at the bottom too. But apparantly from reading Reddit they literally have the ability to brick it from the cloud. Which is very scary stuff.

I'm shocked that a product got worse once Amazon bought the company. </sarcasm>

Seriously though, pretty much guaranteed at this point as I don't think any WiFi 6 device supports OpenWRT right now, the drivers are still in development, though the bricking is one-step beyond crappy of them.

Why even bother letting you keep in when you leave if they're going to pull this?

Amazon firesticks dont even support WPA3 or 802.11w, so the company doesnt exactly seem up to date on basic security mitigations.

There's no image of the email you received email showing in your later post but TalKTalk's T&Cs (https://new.talktalk.co.uk/legal/terms-of-use) say:

The eero device is restricted use and can only be used on the TalkTalk broadband network and with TalkTalk eero enabled packages (currently Fibre 150 and 500 data-only), otherwise they may be deactivated.

I read that as saying they'll disable it if you try and use it on a different TalkTalk package and not if you use it with another ISP. I suppose it depends if the router can still 'call home' from another ISP's connection and if they can then update it via said connection to disable it.

There's no image of the email you received email showing in your later post but TalKTalk's T&Cs (https://new.talktalk.co.uk/legal/terms-of-use) say:

This is what it says in the email

"Your eero will only work with your TalkTalk's Future Fibre service and can be deactivated if used on other networks and packages excluding any additional eeros purchased by one off payment."

There is a post on reddit (hope its ok to link to reddit on the forum) where someone bought a used eero that was locked to a different ISP and it wouldn't do anything whatsoever.
