BT Wholesale Checker - FTTC Availability date planned
« on: July 17, 2021, 09:01:25 PM »

Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anyone knows if the DSL checker showing FTTC Availability Date as being "Planned" actually means anything or if I should contact Openreach for clarity? I am asking for a friend right now who is currently stuck with the options of 11Mbps ADSL or 4G mobile broadband which is obviously not ideal. If it does mean something, would anyone know who to contact to get more information about when upgrades would happen? They are on cabinet 88 on the Sheffield exchange.

Thanks for any help!

Seems more likely its pure FTTP as if codelook is correct that area has zero FTTC (confusingly called Openreach Fibre).  https://www.telecom-tariffs.co.uk/codelook.htm?xid=801843&postcodeloc=14408&cabinet=P88

Some areas it says "Up to 1GB" (also wrong, it should be Gb) which would suggest those areas have FTTP.

Though Codelook is confusing overall.  Not sure why it says "less than 30MB" for areas that only have ADSL2+ which inherently is 24Mbit maximum so surely should say under 24Mb.  Its just confusingly/wrongly worded all round.

FTTC Availability Planned means literally what it sounds like.
Often it is accompanied by a date.

Having a look at a few addresses on that cabinet and they are showing VDSL estimates and FTTC is showing planned.

There is very little FTTC still being installed with the focus being in FTTP.
Sheffield is also in the middle of an FTTP rollout.

However they are still installing FTTC cabinets under the right circumstances.
Cabinets that have a very high proportion of flats/high rise etc with wayleave issues are still viable for FTTC.

It might be a mistake but it usually isn't.

That's interesting, I guess Codelook only gets updated once live then or just periodically so is lagging behind?

Sheffield is also in the middle of an FTTP rollout.

That's an understatement, as we don't just have Openreach but CityFibre and several others, particularly around the city centre.

Seeing as this building is near the Crown Court in Sheffield, it is certainly strange to me that it hasn't yet been upgraded to at least FTTC.

Good news anyway. I told my friend to get in touch with Hyperoptic who it turns out have significant interest in deploying their network in the building as they have covered two separate properties next door. My friend has been able to put them in contact with the building owner so negotiations appear to be getting underway.

Regarding the planned availability of FTTC, I'll keep an eye on it with him. Anything is better than ADSL2+ these days, maybe not satellite.
