Effects of Ethernet
« on: July 22, 2021, 07:08:20 AM »

I was running DSLstats on the laptop ( wireless ) while checking behind my PC , which was off but plugged in to a socket thats switched off. When I removed the ethernet cable from the back of the PC CRC errors shot up SNR margin dropped , so plugged it back in everything returns to normal . Then as an experiment unplug the PC from the power socket and that shows CRC errors but not as dramatic , could this be an earthing problem ? or my old reliable Billion 7800N cheers

I think you need to perform one further experiment . . . and that is to disconnect the Ethernet cable (which runs to the switched off PC) from the Billion 7800N.

What do you now see, reported by DSLstats?

To me, all the results seem to be indicating a problem with the Billion 7800N.  :-\

The ZyXEL model I would normally suggest (VMG1312-B10A) is no longer manufactured and is becoming difficult to find in a good second-hand condition, at a reasonable price.

Perhaps other members will be able to make recommendations?

@noddy If you are inclined to the above, make me an offer - I've just dug one out of my cupboard.

I'd assumed ( obviously wrong ) the HG612 was a VDSL modem ?

The HG612 was an ADSL/VDSL modem/router with two ethernet ports and no WiFi. It was originally used in the UK as a VDSL2 bridge modem, but it also performed well as an ADSL modem/router. It didn't have enough power for practical use as a VDSL2 modem/router, although it did work in that role.

I see :) . I was hoping to stay with a one box option as the router runs from a UPS ( because of all the power cuts we have  :( ) I'll keep researching  :fingers:

The VMG1312-B10A only has 2.4Ghz wireless, you would be better off with the VMG8924-B10A which is dual band 2.4Ghz and 5GHz. I have used this device and it works very well although I have used it in modem mode also providing the wi-fi connection but with a separate router. It would be fine as a single box solution.
