Fibrecities map updates?
« on: July 17, 2021, 02:36:24 PM »

I've been using the fibre cities maps to keep updated on build areas.

https://api.superfastmaps.co.uk/fibrecities/2.0/

It might be my imagination. But did it update recently?

I'm sure the entire Rochdale area wasn't a coloured area before. From the colour it seems to be saying 'to be built by April 2025'.

As anyone else noticed any other areas that have updated?

Does this mean another .pdf month update is coming from OR soon?

Who runs the Fibrecities site? Is it from OR or someone else?

Yes.
My exchange was added in the last couple days. It's now due for completion by April 2024.

Who runs the Fibrecities site? Is it from OR or someone else?

When I call up the URL, the browser shows a title "Openreach Fibre Cities".  :)

I cant make much sense of the map.

I looked at the east midlands where it seems to show lots of rural areas covered but not city centre of coventry, leicester, derby, and nottingham, albeit nottingham seems to have partial city coverage. derby has some small parts planned.

Leicester has a ongoing cityfibre rollout which is not represented on the map at all. Same with coventry.

Maybe it should be renamed fibrevillages? :)

I see my area has been added, or at least it looks like it's 'April 2025'. The colour they chose for that particular one is awful, it blends in with the map.

The map is managaged and maintained by Openreach, so no surprise it doesn't show any CityFibre rollouts on it. It also maps out wider exchange areas that OR are planning to build, it won't include any smaller FTTP projects such as new builds or BDUK deployments.

It's 'by December 2025' so that could be any time from today in theory. I think the reason they are giving these far out dates for exchange areas is largely because there will be phased deployments at an exchange level. While the bulk of the delivery might be done 2021/22, there could be some areas within the exchange coverage that won't be completed until 2024/25.

I would assume there will be a large scoping effort around all the targeted exchanges to understand which villages, streets, estates (etc.) are going to quick and easy to deploy to and which aren't. Openreach will likely then focus their efforts on the easiest areas first to grow the FTTP footprint as quickly as possible before moving into the harder to reach areas.

My exchange is not  on the rollout pdf file or on the maps. We have very little fttp in my town. I only know of 2 developments that have it yet openreach on 2 occasions have told me we should have fttp by around next April  so who knows what to think with that one.....

I don't know why that's happened ... as I'm sure your Exchange area was the correct colour in prior views ??

There's also two more Exchanges literally around the corner from you (KE and H) that are having their spine deployed as we speak and the surveys are also being manually walked in H. They will both be fully FTTP by next year. These also show as the same colour as your build ??

There are other OpenReach maps and documents with more accurate dates

The fibre cities webpage shows either "complete" or "built by April 2024" at the earliest.

There are whole exchanges due to complete this year that say April 2024 on that map.

Sounds like they are just being over cautious with the completion dates. It saves people complaining when targets aren't reached.

I'm a little frustrated that only last year the Oldham council leader stood with the Greater Manchester Mayor talking about bringing Gigabit broadband forward to 2023. I think the Oldham guy was put on a board to make this happen. Yet apart from the rural area of Saddleworth, and the area around the Failsworth exchange that OR are experimenting with, no other area in Oldham is in any plans till beyond 2026. According to the map most areas around Oldham has a date set.
