Good Cheap Router for FTTP
« on: June 11, 2021, 10:46:24 PM »

Looking to get a cheap but decent router for FTTP on the Openreach network as some ISP's don't supply them.
Am I right in thinking I just connect the router to the ont and with rj45 cable and away I go?
Am looking at a TP-Link Archer C6 AC1200 at around £40, any good?

Ideally, you would make use a router capable of handling 1 Gbps at a minimum and would connect it to the ONT via a Cat5e or Cat6 cable.

Hopefully other members will be able to advise you on the capabilities of the TP-Link router.

Thanks for your input, I'm sure someone will know about a good router.

It REALLY depends which FTTP package you plan to get.

A cheap router should handle up to 80Mbit, possibly 330Mbit fine, but 500 or 900Mbit you're not talking cheap routers any more.

The Huawei AX3 Quad-Core handles 900mb/s easily:

I would be looking for either 80Mbit or possibly 150Mbit depending on the price. Thanks for your advice.

Build yourself a pfsense box. Even old x64 hardware will do multi-gigabit

The tp-link apparently has a maximum of 500mb/s over 5ghz according to this review:

What speed is your FTTP?

Not decided yet but either 80Mbit from Aquiss or 150Mbit from BT.
