VMG1312-B10A with any old WIFI 6 wireless router?
« on: May 29, 2021, 03:43:34 PM »

Currently using a Zyxel VMG1312-B10A, which is now well and truly EOL with no new firmware / security available, I find wifi connection getting pretty spotty on some new laptops downstairs using it.  Wifi 6 is here, allegedly, so I figure it's maybe time to upgrade and future-proof a bit.

I don't like the current prices of the all-in-one wifi 6 modem routers so figured using the B10A as modem and pairing it with a wifi 6 wireless router is a cheaper option - but have no idea about partnering compatibility and want something relatively hassle free that just works.

Any stand out 'goto' options people are going with? Or care to opine on the direction I'm thinking of heading in. Thoughts welcome, thanks.   :)

PS: Oh yeah, I've also got two Netgear DG834G (V2 and a V4) in near mint condition in the loft (long forgotten about till last week).

Future proof would be WiFi 6e, so its not the ideal time to do so.

But otherwise yes, putting the Zyxel into bridge mode would let you use almost any router.  (I say almost because you do not mention your ISP and Sky specifically require functionality not all routers have)

Thanks both.

I forgot the details, I'm on Plusnet regular broadband (contract due up in month or so). I've never had a problem with  the service and I live close to the exchange building. Assuming Plusnet is an ISP that's OK with hardware I'll probably get the usual 12 month rolling contract but I'm open to change if need be.

That Hauwei option looks great value, as does the quad core version of it. Looks like a great value half-way house. I was looking at the TP-Link Archer AX20, slightly more expensive and seems to have wider router settings and better VPN options (as it should for the extra).  Seems to get the 'mid level' recommendations?

Thinking a mid level priced option might well actually do me full time.

FYI I was on Plusnet for a few years with an HG612 as modem and various Asus routers. All worked fine. I also had a VMG 8924-B10A as a standby modem. It worked fine but I didn't use it as the HG612 performed well. I am now on NowTV FTTC and my HG612 blew up so I'm using the ZyXEL as modem only and it works fine.

Thanks for the information both, cliver that's good to know in particular because if I decide to get shiny new (more than likely) I've more or less decided on the Asus RT-AX56U, which I suspect will do me for a while.
