Annex A or B for Plusnet and TalkTalk
« on: May 14, 2021, 08:53:18 PM »

Hi. Is it true that the UK FTTC uses Annex A to sync the modem router to the DSLAM and Annex B there after? I'm thinking of getting a TP-Link AC2100 (other name: VR2100). It only mentions Annex for ADSL2 not VDSL2. The router I have at the moment is the cheapest TP-Link one at Argos, £30, and that is VDSL2 and ADSL2 (Annex A) and after a line retrain that I did not ask for, I asked for the QOS to be set properly. I'm getting fast download but 1Mb upload instead of 8Mb sync speed. Could this low upload sync speed be caused because TP-Link is using Annex A? And also is the AC2100 TP-Link fully compatible with Openreach wiring because TP-Link claim Annex A and B is only for ADSL2. I'm on Fibre to the Cabinet VDSL2.

Technically both.

OpenReach uses Annex A infrastructure (POTS) .
OpenReach uses a VDSL2 Annex B Bandplan.

In Germany for example they use Annex B infrastructure (ISDN) with the exact same Annex B bandplan.

Some modems in the UK report Annex B in the stats but it's the bandplan being reported.

Really you want a modem that states it uses Annex A.

If the DSL port is RJ11 then it's Annex A (UK) and if it's an RJ45 DSL port then it's more often than not Annex B.

Nope.
An Annex B infrastructure modem (ISDN) will not sync on ADSL or VDSL2 on OpenReach.

That explains the confusion, thanks for posting that info

many users on some isp forums have got mixed up then

Could this be a leftover from the uk having us hardware to create our phone services?

I read years ago we needed thier hardware and help to expand and update
