Anyone got BT's 1Gbps service yet @ £ 60 a month??
« on: May 06, 2021, 08:25:01 PM »

Hi All

just wondered if anyone has actually gone for the 900Mbps down and 110Mbps up on BT for £60 @ 24 months? and if so what is it like on testing etc? what sort of PING do you get locally?

cheers

Yes.

Ping depends on where you are in the UK but it's fine. To the exchange a little over a millisecond.

Latency is not really any different to FTTC on fastpath, right?

2-3 milliseconds. Nothing ground-breaking.

Just checked my latency to the exchange. It's 1.1-1.3 ms, averaging 1.2.

Round trip latency to 8.8.8.8 from Yorkshire is 6.9 ms.

Via Zen to 8.8.8.8 is 7.4 ms.

Zen is 12.5ms here and Plusnet 10.9.

252.core.plus.net (195.166.130.252)  9.999 ms  11.369 ms  10.517 ms

vt1.cor2.lond2.ptn.zen.net.uk (51.148.72.24)  12.480 ms  13.525 ms  17.955 ms

Pretty much lines up with your 2-3ms improvement, not to be sneezed at as I've not had much luck with game streaming on my connections.

How are you working out the latency to the exchange?

Latency is not really any different to FTTC on fastpath, right?

I answered that exact question from you back in February  :)

As for FTTP, I obviously can't comment though all reports so far are the latency should be identical to FTTC at the same ISP.

I said that the difference was usually around 1-3ms (with the same ISP and same routing) and that the difference on my line was 2.1ms
You said that was margin of error.

There's a definite drop in latency. As Carl says it's about 2-3ms.

My BT FTTC ping was 16ms.
My BT FTTP ping is just under 14ms.
Those numbers are very consistent between PPP sessions, unlike some other ISP's that can vary a lot between different sessions/gateways.

How are you working out the latency to the exchange?

I'd love to know this also.

I'm guessing it's either something displayed in the ONT, or Carls somehow pinging the OLT or Nokia 7750 in his exchange?

On the Broadband Complete product BT purchase from Wholesale the 7750 is configured differently to WBC/WMBC so decrements TTL.

It also sends a TTL expired message.

2-3ms on LAN makes sense and what i expected as it takes 0.2ms to ping router and it takes 1-2ms over Wi-Fi - 22ms to ping google.co.uk (over LAN) on FTTC with Interleaving/INP on high.

I might get it when my Plusnet runs out but is there any usage restrictions? speed loss at nights? do you get 900Mbps on tests?

thanks for the input guys n gals

That first hop isn't my LAN, snadge, it's the exchange.

No, no, yes.

I only lose speed because I'm smashing the PON by pulling 90% of the available bandwidth. I have never seen speed issues when using 1 of my lines alone, always perfect.

Your mileage may of course vary, depending on the capacity available to wherever your FTTP goes. In my case it seems just fine and the BT product doesn't seem to have any issues at all with throughput.

looking at your TBB speed test graph you're getting over 2Gbps..? is that because you have ZEN and BT and are able to combine them>? if so, how do you do THAT? hehe - you would need a 10Gbps router and 10Gbps Network Card in yer PC to get those sort of results yes? - that (if im correct) I would love to know all about your connectivity solution from start-to-end ...if you dont mind?

A router with a 2.5Gb port would be enough, no need for 10Gb ports.

Any router that does dual WAN can combine 2 connections.
Many on the forums use pfsense to combine 2 WAN connections.

His equipment is in his signature and he's made a couple threads about it. He uses a Mikrotek router and has 3 separate FTTP services via his 4 port OpenReach ONT.

Wow (mind blown) - that's brilliant, thanks for that, i had zero knowledge of DACs or SFP+ etc until now, I had to study while reading your post haha, that's fantastic well done. I bet it wasn't cheap to do never mind footing the bill for 3 FTTP services every month, you must have one of the fastest (if not the fastest) broadband in the UK??? I bet you enjoyed installing it all.

now I'm gunna have to learn more about these DACs and SFP+ setups.

thanks again buddy

3 Gbps and 10 Gbps are available from some altnets, and those guys with symmetrical gigabit beat me on the upstream but I'd imagine I've the fastest Openreach FTTP-based service in the country.
