My parents line
« on: May 01, 2021, 12:25:44 AM »

My parents are having a hard time with Plusnet. Their fibre 40/10 was plummeted down to 8Meg on the plusnet hub one and throughput speed was just 5Meg. Raise the fault with PN. They found a fault and arranged for an engineer to come out could be charged £65 fee. The engineer did come and asked me on behalf of my parents why is the fibre drop to 8Meg on Hub One but his testing kit are spot on 40Meg. Went to plusnet account online and shocked to see Plusnet has capped their line at 8Mb at current line speed. Openreach engineer suggest me and agree with me to swap over to Billion 8800NL VDSL Wireless Router to try it out and he also replaced brand new master socket MK4 5C and also resetted DLM on the line.

DLM has retrain their line three times in three steps target SNR 3dB

So their line are now back to 39Meg with 3dB. GEA test showed detected crosstalk as engineer told me their line will not go over 35Meg because of the cabinet almost full and oberfill with crosstalk issues.

A very peculiar story.  ???

But one that has a good ending . . . as the last image shows a very healthy 39.3/9.9 Mbps DS/US synchronisation speed.  :)

They used to be 75/20 but not anymore. It down to below 40Meg at their cabinet good job my parents only paying for PN 40/10 and also billion wifi are fine for 39Meg for their need. Better than crappy plusnet hub one.

Billion reported high retransmission on 1.00 (downstream to put their ip profile rate at lower 91%)

Download speed achieved during the test was 34.38 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 20 - 36.15 Mbps
IP Profile for your line is 36.15 Mbps
34.38 Mbps
36.15 Mbps
Upload Test
Upload speed achieved during the test was 9.44 Mbps
IP Profile for your line is 10 Mbps
9.44 Mbps
10 Mbps

Do some investigations to find out if they can get FTTP any time soon.

As it's only just achieving 40Mbps at 3dB SNR I doubt it'll ever take it off unless you seriously cap the speed. Is it causing them any issues, as if not I'd leave well enough alone.

ReTX high (is that correct) eats up 9% of your link rate so that is not what you want when you’ve already drooped down so low compared to what it once was. Nuisance.

It's probably desirable having the extra protection for stability on this poor line, best leave it alone.

My parents are shocked as their FTTC drop to 21.4/0.5 as I went over to their and check Billion router 8800nl and I can see the last sync rate was 39.2/9.9 down to 21.4/0.5 as the line attenuation increase from 15dB to 19dB that caused the line drop in sync rate probably down to badly congestion overfill at the cabinet with crosstalk issues?

PN say they found no fault at their end nor network. Asking them to put into test socket for further investigated. If still getting max line rate at 21.4/0.5 then what the point for them to pay extra for FTTC 40/10? They both over 75 years old on low income pension. They are fed up. Can't get netflix to work.

Updated on my parents line

The line was noisey at first then raised the fault. Few moment later the line return to max speed and line attenuation has returned to 15dB from 19dB. Dial 17070 for Quiet Line Test, the noisey has disappear and closed the fault now.

Speed back to normal now. Very odd but don't know what has happen.

Very strange indeed.

Were your parents shocked by the drop or were they shocked when you pointed it out to them?

Stop obsessing over both your own stats and those of your parents, please. If it's not noticed in normal usage it doesn't matter.

They told me they couldn't get on Netflix so I went over to check on their TV as I found out their router was very slow crawling! But it all ok now.

They told me they couldn't get on Netflix .

Netflix works for us on ADSL2 at 2.5/0.7  :-\, they need an Ethernet cable to there TV and not rely on WiFi connection.
