Is my VDSL downstream rate normal?
« on: April 29, 2021, 10:33:38 PM »

When I first got VDSL(about 6-7 years ago) my downstream/upstream ran at the max 80/20, now I typically get about 39/15 on speedtests(my guaranteed speed from my ISP is 40-42Mb/s down). These are my current stats from my modem, should I be getting closer to 54Mb down rather than the 42Mb down that is shown(open image in new browser tab for bigger picture)?

Unless I'm missing something, looks like its more-or-less hitting the maximum speed its capable of.

I have no idea where that Max Rate is coming from as with 6.4dB SNR Margin there is no chance it would sync that high.

The one possibility is that ASUS aren't exactly known for having great DSL modems in them, so switching to one of the recommended modems and using the ASUS for just the ethernet side would possibly squeeze a little more out of it.

Have you always used your own router or were you provided with something from your ISP?

I see that Asus has an Infineon (a.k.a. Lantiq (a.k.a. Intel)) xDSL chipset . . . which may or may not be a problem.  :-\

Is the other end of your line connected to an ECI or Huawei cabinet-based DSLAM?

[Edited to strike out the nonsense.]

Not the Asus, the exchange is infineon lantiq, so ECI.

Router is a mediatek trendchip chipset, same chipset was in that idnet SOGEA thread.

Not a recommended router, shame as they are £26 on Amazon at present.

Thank you for the clarification. Looking, once again, at the image I now see that I totally misread it.  :-[

Certainly appears to be getting all it can from that modem, 80/20 down to 42/19 is certainly a hefty drop though. Think I'd be trying a BCM based modem on there to see if it makes some difference.

Agreed. That should be the next step in the testing.
