In London, where the Moon's disc takes its biggest bite out of the Sun at 1016 BST (0916 GMT), a maximum of 12% of the star will be blotted out.

Conditions are better further north. In Lerwick in the Shetland Isles, the Moon will obscure as much as 36% of the Sun.

Just realised it's 20 years ago I went to indonesia to see a total eclipse.

It was magical, though one thing I always remember is when a young lad tried to ride his motorcycle along the beech. I don't know if was an effect peculiar to the volcanic particals (the beech wasn't sand but of a corse grey volcanic dust). but every one lost the perception of where the ground was. The motor cyclist became very wobbly and fell off several times. People where walking round like ducks. It was a strange sensation, each time you took a step you wer'nt sure when your foot was going to make contact with the beech, gave a few people the giggles.

When we lived in Blackpool, our next door neighbour was . . . err!. . . well . . . how would you say it . . . a bit lot on the large side.
If she came out back when the sun was shining . . . THAT is what you would call an ECLIPSE!
Even the street lights in Preston (10 miles away) came on.
