My struggle with getting connection today
« on: April 16, 2021, 08:42:42 PM »

This morning I could not get on the net with my Zyxel vmg8924-b10a for a considerable time, finally switching off the router. After a time I switched back on and there was a connection, but only from router to computer. IPad, radio and printer were absent. First I tried to deal with the IPad. I saw that there was no mention of the Zyxel in the options. Attempts to add it manually from the I pad failed with ‘could not find Zyxel’. The Zyxel is also missing from I player, and many catch up services listed are missing.
|Has any one an idea, what has happened, please, and the cure?

BTW my condition does not make matters easy for me to deal with.

Are you using wireless to connect to the router? If so then this could be a wireless problem. In any case, if possible try connecting your machine, be it a PC/Mac/iPad/phone or whatever, into the router directly with an ethernet cable not wirelessly. I appreciate that some machines eg iPad are wireless-only.

Then the next step is to try pinging the router. If you don’t know the router’s inward-facing IP address then we can try
    tracert 8.8.8.8   or
    ping 8.8.8.8.
The tracert command’s output will show the router’s inwards facing IP address as the first hop/first step in the results. That will also test the internet connection and the wider internet.

If tracert 8.8.8.8 doesn’t obtain a final result then we just ping the router’s IP inward-facing address with
    ping 1.2.3.4 (or whatever, the router’s inwards-facing address that we learned from the tracert)

@renluop I believe you have been and may still be a Plusnet customer, they had an outage early yesterday morning affecting "a small number of customers" which is what they always say!

Details are sparse and nothing is showing on the service status page but there were suggestions on the forum that it was a DNS related problem. It was cleared later in the morning.

This could be the reason for the difficulties you had although it does not really explain the issues you had with devices connected by wi-fi. ???

So at least the local area network is working and the router is up. Worth doing a traceroute to 8.8.8.8 next to test the internet connection and the wider internet.

@renluop

So wired was working but wireless was producing a visible Wireless Network?
Can you confirm the firmware version on the router?
Are you comfortable in the command line interface?

here
Code: [Select]
Tracing route to dns.google [8.8.8.8]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

Cannot find firmware version, sorry.

Might these help with the wireless network?

Cannot find firmware version, sorry.

It's on the fourth line of the second image you attached, above. The firmware version is 1.00(AAKL.28)C0.

Looking at the second image you posted, I see that both the 2.4GHz & 5GHz WLANs have been disabled. See the section headed "Interface Status". So that's why you have no wireless connectivity.

I'll leave it to others, those who know the ZyXEL VMG8924-B10A, to guide you in re-enabling them.

@renluop,

The vmg8x24 series has a physical button to turn the wireless on and off.

So given that you’ve proved that you sometimes have an internet connection and a working LAN or WLAN (?), the question is “why is it sporadic a sporadic problem ?”

On my iPad, I very occasionally get a problem with the wireless subsystem where everything wi-fi stops working, and the fix is to turn wi-fi off then back on by using the swipe-down in the top rhs corner which brings up a group of settings icons.

But I’m assuming you have had a more serious problem. If there’s a central problem though, something to do with the wireless router, then that will need more debugging.

All working now with only router computer linked by ethernet. Thanks all and apologies for my panicky stupidity, that's been a nuisance to you all.
