TT VDSL Connection Sync Speed Dropped Over Time
« on: April 16, 2021, 07:25:25 PM »

Hi all

Just wanted to understand what could be going on here with our connection with Talktalk. We moved into this house last year and the previous max connection rate was around 67-68Mbps DS. Last month I noted that our max connection rate had dropped to mid 40s. This was with the Talktalk HG633. So swapped that for the Zyxel 8924 flashed with Johnsons x6 firmware with stats. Whilst that has pulled the max connection rate up, it is hovering around 52-53Mbps. This is all connected to a NTE5C MK4 filtered faceplate with no phones and the older extension wiring disconnected in a bid to eliminate all sources of interference. Reading from the various pointers from the forum here, I was expecting the DS SNRM to go up over 6db for it to sync higher post reconnection. However the SNRM is currently 5.6db, so puzzled a bit over what could be causing the max connection speed to go down like this. Looking at the difference between the old (HG633) and new (Zyxel 8924) stats I can see that the downstream power has reduced significantly, so could that be the reason for the speed drop? Also the DS attenuation has increased but reading across other threads it appears the Zyxel reports it higher normally, so unsure if that is to be considered or not.

Any advice on your observations that could help identify the cause and restore or improve my connection will be greatly received. :) I have the connection graphs, etc. from Johnson's firmware so can share any SNR, etc.  if required.

Now you're  running the Zyxel I suggest you run DSLStats to gather more data. I wonder if your cabinet is an ECI rather than a Huawei as you don't have G.INP active, DSLStats will allow us to tell.

Hey Stuart

Thanks for the point. I did check that but forgot to mention earlier. I think I am connected to an ECI cabinet (Infineon - again read here somewhere :) )

Welcome to the kitz forum. :)

Yes, your circuit is connected to an ECI Hi-FOCuS Mini-Shelf M41 DSLAM.  :(

Looking at the four shapshot plots (Bit Loading, Hlog, QLN and SNR) I see nothing of concern. It's clear that you have done you research so, perhaps, you won't be that surprised to read that I suspect that the degradation in your circuit's synchronisation speed is probably down to nothing more than crosstalk.

Thank you burakkucat for taking the time to review and respond. I am learning from the pointers from multiple threads, so was interpreting results as I understood them but missed the effects of crosstalk. So basically there has been increased uptake of broadband at my cabinet thus introducing crosstalk that was absent previously. I checked for vectoring using the --vectoring option and there's none active, so guess it's waiting time now.

Is there anything in the charts/figures that gives this conclusion away - so i could read it the same way? Also is there anything I can do to get the line to be off Interleaved and onto Fastpath to reduce latency for a young fortnite fan at home?

If you have to power off your router it is important that you allow 30 minutes between a shutdown and reboot of your router, more quickly than that and DLM might assume you have an issue and either add interleaving or keep it if already set. Other than that give it a few days and see if being stable DLM might lower or remove it. Others have found that by forcing down your connection speed (which you can do with the Zyxel) might trick DLM into removing it, although once you allow the speed back it may get put back again. I guess you may find nothing much will improve it. I'm on an ECI cabinet and I was interleaved for a couple of years until G.INP was reactivated and I'm on TT as well. I don't have a fortnite enthusiast here so it was not an issue  ;)

You may get lucky and G.INP might get activated but I'm not sure at present they are continuing the roll out  :(

It is actually the lack of the visible presence of any other "aliments" that hints towards cross-talk being the likely cause.

Stuart (broadstairs) has explained the best course of action . . . and I doubt that G.Inp will be enabled on the ECI M41 to which your circuit is connected. Usage of ECI equipment has been dropped by Openreach.

Thank you both Stuart and burakkucat for your help with explanation. I did read about issues with ECI cabinets here on other threads. It's little to see on the default ISP routers to educate ourselves of what is happening with these things. Glad with what the Zyxel can show and Johnson's image enhancing it further...

Thanks again.... made a small donation to the site....little I can do to help
