FTTP vlan tagging
« on: March 23, 2021, 11:12:22 AM »

I have a query which I am hoping someone can assist with regarding vlan tagging. Currently my connection is split between a vdsl connection to BT using a Draytek 2860 in bridged mode, and a 4G connection via a Huawei router. The Draytek and the Huawei connect to a mini pc running pfsense and this feeds a switch. In the pfsense box I have added a vlan interface with a vlan tag of 101 and this is used by the BT PPPoE connection to the Draytek.

I am now in the fortunate position of having fttp installed next month and I am seeing conflicting advice on the web. Some claim that the ONT that Openreach install does the tagging and others have stated that the tagging is still required. Since I am not keen on using the BT "smarthub 2" which they are sending me and want to retain the pfsense box. I was wondering if anyone can confirm whether or not vlan tagging is still required to access the BT PPPoE connection?

I'm 99% sure the ONT will bridge VLAN 101 to the ethernet port, not all of the PTM interface.  That's how the HG612/ECI modems work and I'm not sure why you weren't doing that on the Draytek as AFAIK its how everyone here utilises bridge mode.

The only occasion I can think of why they might not have done that is for people early on where voice may have gone over its own VLAN and so it would need to pass that to the router, although I think those people the telephone was handled in the ONT anyway so probably still only passed VLAN 101 traffic untagged out the ethernet port.

There is no logical reason to pass the entire PTM interface over to the router when it only needs VLAN 101.

I am also fairly certain that the ONT performs the VLAN tagging/detagging.

There's no VLAN tagging required on your router for OpenReach FTTP.
I use my own router with FTTP and no VLAN tagging was necessary.

With FTTC the VLAN tagging is done by the modem not the router.
The ONT is basically the modem
If any VLAN tagging is done then it is done by the ONT.

The ONT is locked so nobody can see if VLAN 101 is even used although I'm sure CarlT would be able to say if the ONT does this.

I've just checked with an Openreach branded Huawei HG8240 (the original 4+2 device) that is in "the grotto" at "The Cattery". A VLAN tagged 201 with priority 7 is specified.

Sorry - but a first glance I thought it said “FTTP VAN tagging”.

I thought Black Sheep had a stalker.  :)
