Am I the only one who sees "MI5-audited network" . . .

I must have missed something, somewhere. Will you give me a pointer to where you see that statement, please?

It’s on the IDNet website somewhere, in a group of icons with legends in them.

I'm hitting quite close to 2TB. In Feb 2021, I used >1.6TB. If I was using my internet connection for offsite backups, no doubt I would go over if I was on AAISP.
I'm using the connection for a mixture of working from home, gaming, uploading gameplay recordings, video streaming, etc.

Offsite backups wouldnt impact anything anyway as the quota is only for downloads.  Unless maybe you recovering those backups.  Likewise streaming, uploading videos no impact.

The limits on AAISP are designed to be enough for mainstream use, and easily enough, I guess the few guys replying here are not mainstream users, and my view on that is then yes AAISP is not suitable for you guys.

AAISP is a small isp and allowing unlimited usage could completely trash their network, so I can understand their approach. 2.4tb is absolutely huge usage even though it may not seem like it.  Note though office::1 package does cater for that.  So there is an option on AAISP even for that level of usage.

I wouldn't say mainstream users though, as mainstream users would just use a mainstream ISP.

AAISP are a very specific middle-ground for users where reliability is more important.

I do find their approach a little odd though, as surely having a quota doesn't reduce their peak-time load, and its THAT load which determines their overall network capacity.

I preferred how Plusnet used to work, where the quota would apply to peak-time usage and you'd be throttled at peak time if you went over.  Its a lot less drastic than having to pay for excess usage.  Kinda ironic considering I had just been talking about how much I hate packet filtering by ISPs, but I hate quotas more.

I noticed this claim from IDNet:

"Why IDNet? Speed! The lowest-latency network in the UK."

Source: https://www.idnet.com/availability-checker.php

Noticed SoGEA, still I'm getting 80/20 from Vodafone including line rental for £23, cant see a reason to change

Thank you, both. Now I see it.

To be honest, a company that makes such a boast will never gain my business.

Plusnet's situation was entirely different, AAISP are adopting a model to avoid having to need to apply that kind of traffic management, whilst Plusnet were trying to sell as many connections as possible and then using the management to make it all work.

Could AAISP do it better, or is the quota not having an effect? No idea.  But its a good thing we have consumer choice, not one single isp is a good choice for everyone. :)

I honestly wasn't suggesting AAISP do it any other way, it clearly fits their niche of customers and is profitable.  I'm just curious how having a monthly cap actually stops them getting overloaded at peak time.

From what I read some years ago I think in the past AA had to pay carriers lots of money for traffic from exchanges. I just always assumed it was about money in this respect although now things may be different.

Yes, I'm with IDNet, and very satisfied with them, but I'm not a gamer so I can't make any useful comments on this topic.

I missed this, however I can do traceroutes / pings to those from 3 different ISPs, 2 across BT Wholesale network, 1 across Zen.

BT Retail over BT Wholesale:

To the BBC: 5 of 5 packets received   0 % packet loss   Min: 6 ms   Avg: 6 ms   Max: 6 ms
213.202.225.31:  5 of 5 packets received   0 % packet loss   Min: 18 ms   Avg: 18 ms   Max: 18 ms
146.66.156.80: 5 of 5 packets received   0 % packet loss   Min: 27 ms   Avg: 27 ms   Max: 28 ms
178.217.190.22: 5 of 5 packets received   0 % packet loss   Min: 32 ms   Avg: 32 ms   Max: 32 ms
80.72.34.124: 5 of 5 packets received   0 % packet loss   Min: 38 ms   Avg: 38 ms   Max: 38 ms
zabijaka.pl: 5 of 5 packets received   0 % packet loss   Min: 38 ms   Avg: 38 ms   Max: 38 ms

Zen over BT Wholesale:

BBC: 5 of 5 packets received   0 % packet loss   Min: 7 ms   Avg: 7 ms   Max: 7 ms
213.202.225.31: 5 of 5 packets received   0 % packet loss   Min: 19 ms   Avg: 19 ms   Max: 19 ms
146.66.156.80: 5 of 5 packets received   0 % packet loss   Min: 33 ms   Avg: 33 ms   Max: 33 ms
178.217.190.22: 5 of 5 packets received   0 % packet loss   Min: 33 ms   Avg: 33 ms   Max: 33 ms
80.72.34.124: 5 of 5 packets received   0 % packet loss   Min: 41 ms   Avg: 41 ms   Max: 41 ms
zabijaka.pl: 5 of 5 packets received   0 % packet loss   Min: 38 ms   Avg: 38 ms   Max: 38 ms

Faelix over Zen Wholesale:

Higher than the above - need to reconnect to a London RAS but 2-3 ms higher than Zen direct either way.

Surprised no one has mentioned "Ghost Gamer Broadband" https://www.ghostgb.co.uk/, They seem to use AS199283 Structured Communications https://bgp.he.net/AS199283#_peers

"Ghost Gamer Broadband connections are provided over our specialist network, linked directly to Xbox, Steam, Twitch, Amazon, and Google for rapid gaming response times."

This maybe true but all ISPs will have links directly Xbox, Steam, Twitch, Amazon, and Google via LINX however downside that i can see is they don't have any public peering exchange points expect London but no AMS-IX and DE-CIX Frankfurt, Remember France is 14-16ms and Netherlands are more the same if you can was from North London.

So IDNet https://gaming.idnet.uk only have 1G in each location, AMS-IX, DE-CIX Frankfurt etc https://www.peeringdb.com/net/1108
https://www.peeringdb.com/net/155 ENTANET Wholesale,  Aquiss is one of them 10G to DE-CIX Frankfurt and AMS-IX
https://www.peeringdb.com/net/261 Vodafone UK has 20G in DE-CIX Frankfurt and AMS-IX
https://www.peeringdb.com/net/721 TalkTalk has 100G in DE-CIX Frankfurt and AMS-IX
https://www.peeringdb.com/net/118 BT has 200G in DE-CIX Frankfurt and AMS-IX

IDNet https://gaming.idnet.uk are not the only ones for advising "Gaming" take a look at Zen's https://www.zen.co.uk/broadband/gaming-broadband
