Wild weather just now
« on: March 10, 2021, 02:40:44 AM »

The wind yesterday evening was very wild; 85mph gust in the North of The Island, not that rough where we are though, I’m sure. The power went off for a short while all over the whole of Skye, parts of the mainland (eg. Plockton), and even out in the Western Isles, so it must have been something pretty major. Someone mentioned something to do with lightning, but I didn’t hear any thunder, nor did my lightning alert app give any warnings (and I have the warning radius set to ~70 mi).

Thankfully the UPSes kept us going through the short outage. The WAPs use the replacement wall-brick micro UPS units that someone tipped me off about a couple of years ago. They really are brilliant.

Not sure how I missed those, was using an external unit from Amazon but that doesn't have the adapter for the HomeHub.

Seems the new URL to purchase them is https://1va.co.uk/ipower-12vdc-ups-system-p-29.html

My wife has told me that even now-ish, as of Wed 11:00, power is still out in An t-Aodann Bàn, and Port Rìgh is relying on huge generators which have been brought in.

How do you get a portable generator big enough to light a whole town of thousands of people?

Janet has a couple of large ‘power bank’ lion batteries for iPads. They do seem to give a really good extended run-time. I need to keep one by my bed in case of power cuts.

By using bigger versions of the following:

(For those wondering, no, there is not a large tread-wheel, powered by felines, coupled to an alternator inside the casing.)

That's a little on the small side BC, I've seen them in 20' and 40' containers.
