hi tim

>> may have more to do with the fact that I have the Netgear NG834GT,

not so much a problem with the NG834GT....  its just that the DG had an exceedingly good reputation of being able to hang in when most others couldnt... and you could probably do worse with some other routers.
I think its fair to say that a lot will struggle once you start getting under 6dB.

Found this while googling for router tweaks and thought I should share them here.

Enable debug on the router, then telnet to the router, then adslctl configure --sra on or adslctl configure --snr 110 or even 120.

--sra on will enable the router to track SNR and increase/decrease speed accordingly to line conditions.

--snr xxx would aim on getting a SNR (margin) at xxx% off "nominal" which is set by the ISP, but is normally -6dB. that is, 110 would get you 6.6, 120 - 7.2 etc.

adslctl info --show command will tell you how much margin you currently have (after configure command will force the router to retrain).
Normally you should have at least 6.0 dB for both uplink & downlink to ensure stable connection without interruptions.

Off the top of my head - those look like the same commands as those that work on the DG834GT.
wonder if they use a similar firmware
(Commands dont work on a DG834G).

I'm glad other people do that sort of thing too. :)

ok i just clicked thet "enable debug on the router" link and my router said "debug enabled!"...........what have done????  ???

edit , after some research i fing that debug mode is not a good idea security wise .... so how do i turn it off?

edit.again , after turning the router on and off again i find i can no longer telnet to my router so im assuming debug mode is now off , however i think a wee warning as regards that link would'nt be a bad idea as it seems to leave your router wide open! It would also stop muppets like me playing with things thay didnt previously understand  ;)

After debug mode has been enabled you can turn it off like this:

1. Telnet into the router and login as required.
2.Type 'ps x' (without the quotes). This gives you a list of running processes.
3. Near the end of the list you will see an item called 'telnetd' (or similar, I'm typing this from memory) with a process ID number beside it. Let's say the number is 1234.
4. Type 'kill 1234' (using the actual process ID number of course)

This stops the telnet daemon and terminates your telnet session.
