Netgear NG834GT Line Stats
« on: November 25, 2006, 07:04:21 PM »

My current provider is UKOnline with 8Mb

We often have issues where our interent grinds to a stop and I have to reboot the router to get it back again.

Here aer my line stats.

ADSL Link                Downstream  Upstream
Connection Speed  5888 kbps     768 kbps
Line Attenuation     47.0 db         30.0 db
Noise Margin           5.1 db           5.0 db

I am connected using the test socket and have used different filters and still get the same issue.

Any advice?

Those stats are pretty good for what is obviously a rather long line. I suppose that what's most likely is that external noise sources are causing the connection to drop, and if you're already using the test socket there's not much else you can do internally. Can you monitor the router stats over time to see if the noise margin varies much?

Hi and thanks  ;D

What I have noticed over the last day is that when I first connect the downstream noise margin is around 8 dB but gradually falls to about 5 dB at which point my internet access grinds to a halt. I will try and keep a better log of line stats to try and build a picture of what is happening.

I sent my previous line stats to UKOnline's support and got the following reply:

I have made a few configuration changes to your line.  Please can you monitor this to see if it behaving any better.

With regards to your line quality, as these are actual statistics of your line, there is nothing that we can do to improve them.  BT can do a health check on your line to ensure that there are no faults on the line, but they also cannot improve the line quality.  The only way they could do anything would be a lay a new telephone cable from your exchange to your home, however this is a major and very expensive undertaking and so is not really an option.

Who do I contact at BT to get a "health check" on the line and what would this involve?

Indeed that would never happen lol. The most that could ever be done would be to try and trace out some spare pairs on existing cables  and that only applies to lines which are struggling to get ADSL at all.

With a 5dB noise margin it would be expected that the exhcange monitoring equipment might aim for a higher target SNR margin. This means a slight drop in your connection speed in order to achieve a more stable connection. As the folks on here will say, the target SNRM is normally around 7dB.

With regards to a BT "health check", this normally involves a quick process using software whereby the exchange reports back a few simple stats on line resistance etc to check that all is OK with the line.

Indeed somehow having your maxDSL profile lowered would likely bring you a higher SNR M and some stability.

Seems to be more stable now after their "configuration changes"

ADSL Link    Downstream   Upstream
Connection Speed    5088 kbps   768 kbps
Line Attenuation    48.0 db      30.0 db
Noise Margin    8.8 db      16.0 db

Looks like they have dropped my maxDSL as mentioned previously by soms to give me what so far has been a more stable Sunday evening (which is always nice)

Perhaps your target noise margin has been pushed up to 9dB, which will probably help you a lot in your situation.

I think I'd agree with you there.   :)
If the ISP put in a request to increase the target SNR then it brings your sync speed down, but can vastly improve the stability of the line.

Have had the most stable connection since get it in March!!, has been up nearly 20hrs with no issues.  ;D
Current stats:

ADSL Link              Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5088 kbps    768 kbps
Line Attenuation    48.0 db        30.0 db
Noise Margin          9.6 db          16.0 db

Thanks again for the help and advice it has meant my wife has been able to update her web page with no issues (and no nagging in my direction)

The downstream noise margin dropped to 5.5db and the connection was no more  :(

From what I have read on these forums is that may have more to do with the fact that I have the Netgear NG834GT, which if I understand correctly is not as good as others on keeping a connection with low margins.

Does anyone know of any hints or tweaks I could use on the router to improve it's performance?
