Author Topic: Voice line issue fixed - FTTC upstream sync reduced, errors up, interference up?  (Read 546 times)

Hi, I've gleaned a lot of info from this site over the years which i'm thankful for however now I make my first post seeking advice.

Historically my line sync'd at 22.4mbps down and 5.6mbps up with Sky in 2019 (March/April), G.INP enabled (HG612 and ECI cabinet), stable, e.g. 25 days with 156 ES with flat SNRM 7-7.5db.  Although I don't have stats further back, I know it sync'd at 25mbps when I first got it around 2014/2015 with Sky router.  My line is about 1,000m long.

It remained at that speed when I transferred to PlusNet in January 2020 but unfortuntely I wasn't really paying attention to my broadband performance and I don't have any stats for that period to tell me when G.INP was removed but I have a snapshot from October 2020 where it's been removed and interleaving is set to 441, INP=3.00, with an average of 150 ES per day, SNR=6.  otherwise stable connection and flat SNRM.

Fast forward to December 2020 when I notice some audible noise on line, my stats were uptime 39 days, average 100 ES per day,  22.5mbps down, 5.2mbps up, interleaving=443, INP=3.00, SNR=6.2.  I reported the fault and also asked if this could explain why my broadband connection appeared to have slowed over time since I first got it as I rarely use the phone and guessed it could have been present or slowly getting worse.

An engineer attended (31-Dec), fixing a joint where the cable enters my property, he also reset the DLM on my broadband line which resulted in higher sync speed around ~25-28mbps pending the training period.  However the noise returned on the line shortly after that, I used the quietline test and turned off all electrical appliances in my house until I turned off the main trip switch to isolate everything and the noise was still present.  A second engineer visited (13-Jan) and replaced the incoming cable which had water ingress, he told me to ask my provider (PlusNet) to reset the DLM as he couldn't (i've asked, they won't).  I now also have the new mk4 master socket.  The line is syncing ~25-26mbps down but only ~4.2mbps up, interleaving re-applied at ~517, INP=3.00, SNRM~6 but an interference pattern on SNRM and with many ES (around 200-300 per day, with some higher), which I am presuming will result in further mitigation and a reduction in performance at some point.

So far I have stated to my provider that the up sync has reduced significantly (from 5.2 to 4.2mbps) but they say estimate is 4-7mbps so there's no action to be taken at present.  Some observations I have made is that the 'Power dBm' for down and up is now 2.1db whereas previously it has been around 4-5db and my attenuation has reduced by a digit or so.  I'ver attached an SNR chart of the last 24hours which is reasonably representative of what I am observing, 'steady' through the morning to mid afternoon and then interference through the evening and entering what I would describe as reasonably stable overnight with a small period of instabilty in the morning.  PS. worth noting that I am working from home and I cannot relate the periods of interference to any electrical appliances like washing machine etc.

What is my best course of action regarding raising this further with my provider?  I am hoping that a local FFTP provider will be active in my area soon but there's no ETA or guarantees so I'm stuck with this for the time being.

Apologies for the long post and stay safe.
Regards, Alex.

It might not be what you want to hear but there's little you can do.
Crosstalk eats away at both the downstream and upstream.

G.INP on ECI cabinets is only in a trial and you can no longer be added to the trial so there's zero chance of that returning unless the trial is successful.

The upstream isn't banded/capped so a DLM reset would not increase upstream sync.
Actually it wouldn't increase downstream sync either. It should sync the exact same after a DLM reset (Interleave Low profile).

You're on the default DLM profile, it isn't holding the line back.
Plusnet won't send an engineer to try improve speeds as you are within your estimates.

If there's noise on the voice line then report that as a voice fault.
Any fix there "might" improve sync a little.

Thanks for your reply.  I understand that crosstalk is probably the main reason for my lines performance, however I wouldn't have expected the degradation in SNRM and a 1mbps drop in upstream in one go after having the line noise fixed, I can't see how this would be normal and i'm open to how I can present it to get taken seriously.
