BT broadband slow download speed
« on: November 25, 2006, 04:28:09 PM »

I have previously experienced download speeds of up to 1Mb. I have been on BT option 3 for 3 months and seen my speed crash to 230Kbs at all times of the day and night. A BT engineer said I was getting 1.7 Mb in to the house so he could do nothing. My BT home Hub stats from the master socket are:

Uptime:   0 days, 1:45:29

Modulation:   G.992.1 Annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:   448 / 1632

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]:   148 / 2.34

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:   12.0 / 16.5

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:   31.5 / 63.0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:   17.0 / 15.0

Vendor ID (Local/Remote):   TMMB / TSTC

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote):   0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote):                   0/ 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote):   0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote):   0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote):   0 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down):   0 / 16

CRC Errors (Up/Down):   0 / 0

HEC Errors (Up/Down):   0 / 0

I realise I can never get more than 1Mb as I live about 4 km from the exchnge but to get 50% of my previous speed to me, means something is wrong.  Is there any thing I could  do to improve things?

Any advice  would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Humpdoc, welcome to the forum.

Your connection figures look perfectly fine for an IP profile of 1000 kbps, and with a bit of tweaking you might get up to 1500 kbps. If your download speed is a lot less, then either your IP profile has been set at a low value or you're suffering from exchange congestion (or ISP traffic management). You can check what your IP profile is by going to http://speedtester.bt.com/ but the facility is underresourced and you can waste your life away waiting for it to come back and say it's busy. :( The best time to get in is very early in the morning.

Thanks,

My IP profile is 250Kbps from previous speed tests on this site.

After complaining again today my IP profile has been changed to 500kbps ::)

Download speed  now 450kps!

Do I need to get them to change this to 1.0 MB or even 1.5/2.0 given my downstream speed??

If you consistently sync at or around the speed that you mentioned in the first message, your IP profile should automatically go up to 1000 kbps after three days. It's not normally manually set unless it gets stuck, which may have been what happened to you. I suggest that you wait for a few days and see if the automatic process works. But do be aware that, if you get another low-speed connection your IP profile will go straight back down (*) and you'll have to wait another three days for it to come back up.

(*) There is a process called 'blip logic' which is supposed to avert an immediate drop in the IP profile caused by an occasional low speed re-sync, but it only comes into play after 14 days at the higher speed.
