The Best I Can Get? Or Not?
« on: December 23, 2020, 11:10:49 AM »

Hi All,

I've recently moved from a full fibre house to a FTTC house. Think I'm on an ECI Cab and I'm using an unlocked HG612 for now but could possibly use a FritzBoz 7530 in Bridge Mode. I use an ASUS-RT-AC-88U as a router. Anyway, could some kind person in the know have a look at my stats and say whether this is the best I can hope to get on this line? The line is with Zen and during the initial call to change address they did hint that we should be close to the 80/20 max in both directions.

Think I'm on an ECI Cab . . .

It would be helpful to know, for sure, the manufacturer of the electronics equipping the cabinet. If you would be willing to state the serving telephony exchange and the PCP (primary cross-connection point) number we could take a look.

Until we know that information, your two questions (posed in the subject line) cannot be answered.

Found this which would suggest the line can do better?

According to MagentaSystems CodeLook site --

Quote
Cabinet P8    FTTC Available from 5th July 2013, expanded 30th November 2019    Phase 9a 2012-2013    438    ECI    G53 7JA

The initial deployment was a cabinet equipped with an ECI Hi-FOCuS Mini-Shelf M41 DSLAM but the expansion, just over a year ago, will have been with Huawei equipment.

So the next question is via which equipment does your circuit connect? The best way to find the answer is to ask the HG612 modem --

Perhaps give the Fritzbox a try and see how that syncs.

Just don't have too many resyncs in a day as the DLM can cap your sync speed.
Configure the device before connecting it.

You're on an ECI cabinet.
The DLM has nothing to give to increase speeds.
Without physical changes (correcting possible issues with wiring) then there isn't much that can be done to improve things.

As you are below the handback threshold for your line it might be worth asking your ISP to investigate. Whether they will or not I don't know.
Before doing that I'd look at your internal wiring to see if it can be optimised at all.

Your cabinet must be right next to the house with those predicted stats.  I am on an ECI cabinet which is the other side of my front garden wall and my low predictions are 75.7 with a handback threshold of 70.9(Clean) and 74.1 and 68.7 respectively (Impacted).

Zen should investigate with your sync speed being below the handback threshold.  It would almost certainly help their diagnostics to have the Fritzbox connected.  Zen may well get an OR engineer to call out, but they aren't likely to come into your premises to investigate (for fairly obvious reasons at the moment).

Thanks for all the feedback.

For info the modem is connected directly to the master socket 5C with one of these https://www.run-it-direct.co.uk/rj11-to-rj45-patch-leads/RJ11toRJ45patchlead5M/. There are no internal extensions and we don't use a landline so no phone connected to the socket either.

Think I'll give the FritzBox a go in Bridge Mode (I'll miss the stats lol) and then give Zen a call if no improvement. Must admit the HG612 is well old and has had loads of use so maybe it's not in tip top form...!!

Well I've just re-booted the HG612 via the GUI and it's actually synced a little lower so I'll def try the FritzBox later.

Further to this I've just paced out the distance of the cab to my house whilst walking the dog and I guess it's around 160 yards or so. Doesn't mean that's the route of the cable lol...

IFTN is Infineon and, thus, we can tell that you are connected via an ECI equipped cabinet.  :(

@Dambuilder if you are really fed up with the speed and have very deep pockets, you can do as I did and use IP bonding to double, treble or whatever, the line speed in both directions. I have four lines bonded to give me a real 10.8 Mbps / 1.5 Mbps TCP SDU (ie payload) throughput from the combined four lines that each sync at around 3 Mbps / 0.5Mbps (so need to convert the latter figures by multiplying them by 0.884434 for ADSL2 overheads to get to IP PDU rates)

That is a high handback speed, mine is 43.9 clean, and 35 impacted.

I suspect most people are on or about your speed OP.

FTTC is a victim of its own success. I had a next door neighbour who decided to get Sky FTTC. My speed immediately dropped by around 10Mbps. When he left Sky for VM my speeds shot back to their original level.
