Explorer Very Slow to Create New Folder
« on: November 29, 2020, 08:56:05 PM »

Running Win 10 Home, V.2004, OS Build 19041.630, fully up to date.
Issue has occured relatively recently on my Ryzen-5 desktop PC, probably a by-product of one of the recent MS system updates but not sure which, other parties are reporting the same issue.

Opening Win explorer and trying to create a new folder (by right mouse click) produces a 10 to 20 sec. delay before the file is created.
Trying to rename a file within explorer produces a similar delay.
After the first delayed operation, subsequent file creation or renaming operations are normal, ie. no delays.
Closing and re-opening win explorer produces the same scenario again.

Have tried the 2 listed fixes:
De-selecting, "Show recently used files in Quick access"
De-selecting, "Show recently used folders in Quick access"
Clear file explorer history

Stop Win Search Service

Neither worked for me.

Have monitored "Windows Explorer" process in Task Manager while the delay is active, the process does not indicate "stalled" or overly active.

Anyone else noticed this or suggest a solution ?

I'm on fully up to date Win 10 20H2.

Creating folders is practically instantaneous.

Yes, same revision, all available and optional Win updates implemented.
I'am certainly not the only person experiencing this issue hence the suggested solutions which in my case don't work.

Have checked out my other Win 10 PC's:

i5 dual boot Linux/Win 10 desktop PC, running Win 10 Home, 20H2, fully up to date.
Windows AV & FW only deployed.
Same issue experienced.

i5 laptop, Win 10 Home, V.1909 18363.1198
Bitdefender AV/FW, Internet Security, 2021.
Same issue experienced.

As my main desktop PC also has Bitdefender installed, had initially thought that this could possibly be a factor as this had just been updated to the latest 2021 release, however, disabling all AV/FW functions did not cure the issue and my i5 desktop PC which does not use Bitdefender exibited the same issue.

As Max posted ... I would do a reset then see if you still have any issues

and Windows 10 ver 19041.630 is 2004
                              19042.630 is 20H2 latest version

I have indexing on all drives.

Thanks to all for the interest and support to date, much appreciated.

Yes, now understand what is meant by a Windows reset but consider that pretty drastic, have gone down that route before with previous issues and it's taken a lot of effort to get back to my original configuration, last resort for me.

I decided to try booting into Win safe mode, always a good diagnostic starting point.

Safe mode with networking enabled, issue the same.
Safe mode without networking, issue cured!

Anyone any suggestions regarding this observation?

Local account, only one account set up in all cases.

Can you access other folders/files on the networked machines fairly quickly?

Yes, normal operation.
Creating a new folder or shortcut on the desktop is also normal, no delays.
Have also noted that creating (for example) a Word document then saving to either desktop or any folder also produces a very significant delay to complete the operation.

I have a very long standing issue with non-display of network devices in Explorer (pre-dates this current issue) which makes me think that there may be a connection especially as running in Win safe mode without network access cures the (delay) issue.

The Explorer network devices non-display issue goes back a very long time to previous Win updates and is well documented, MS won't admit it exists and as such have never produced a fix.
Various parties have come up with work arounds which did work for me until recently but does not any more.

Tiffy, If it was me I would do a Windows reset (keep files and settings), this seems to cure 99.99% of Win related problems.
Have you asked over at https://www.tenforums.com they would be far more knowledgeable than me on this subject.

Linux is looking more attractive by the day! agreed, but because i'm an avid gamer... i'm stuck with MS :-X
