Have ZyXel given up on VMG series routers?
« on: November 21, 2020, 12:14:56 PM »

I occasionally check for new firmware at ZyXel's site - https://www.zyxel.com/uk/en/support/download_library.shtml - but there is now no sign of any firmware, old or new, for the VMG series routers. Old firmware is still on their FTP site - ftp://ftp.zyxel.com/ - but you need to know that's there to find it.
Have they given up on the VMG series now?

The Zyxel EMEA site lists the VMG3927-T50K, VM3625-T50B and the VMG1312-T20B, although the DX3300-T0 looks interesting:
https://service-provider.zyxel.com/emea/en/products/dsl-cpes/vdsl/modemresidential-gateways

Are Zyxel seriously going T Series, as I see the VMG8825-T50K is on the FTP site but Zyxel are wiping their hands of supporting isp versions:

hopefully should be cheap on ebay

Zyxel are wiping their hands of supporting isp versions:

They have never supported ISP only provided modems.

They only provide firmware for devices they sell in a retail environment.
Many of the VMG series routers were provided to both ISP's and direct to consumers so could easily be unlocked.

They have always had a few modems and routers that are exclusively for ISP's and you can't find generic firmware for these.

The VMG8825-T50K-NL01V1F / T-Mobile NL looks to be 1 of those.
Nothing new about that approach.

I saw those, but there's no firmware listed for them on the main site.
I'm not sure what's going on.

Perhaps it’s just a screw-up? Website maintenance gone wrong ? I’m not particularly convinced by my own suggestion.

It's a bit odd that they have removed a large amount of devices from their download library links.
The 8924 and 1312 specs/support pages have been gone a while but you could still search for the device and find firmware links.

Still about a dozen firmware versions for the 8924 on their ftp site.
You need to know the link as there's no way to find it through Zyxel's website.

ftp://ftp.zyxel.co.uk/

They even have a non ISP firmware for the apparently ISP only VMG8825-T50K discussed above.
ftp://ftp.zyxel.co.uk/VMG8825-T50K/firmware/
Which is more than they provide for some other models issued to ISP's in parts of South America and Egypt.

With a few of the VMG series models used by some members here on kitz, Zyxel would often help providing the Supervisor password without having to decrypt it yourself.

However they would ask for the router serial number and if you provided the serial number of an ISP supplied device support would end at that point, referring you back to your ISP.

If you provided a retail model serial number they would provide the Supervisor password and even offered to register the devices warranty for you.

@LittleBitGrumpy:
Welcome to the site.

Based on the ftp link supplied by "tubaman", this is specifically the 1312-B10A link:
ftp://ftp.zyxel.com/VMG1312-B10A/firmware/
(being ftp link may query application but should run in your browser, I use FF)

As you can see from my signature I'am still running a 1312-B10A as modem on my FTTC line, has always been the best performer for me.
Running the latest available FW, V.1.00(AAJZ.17)C0, 2/1/19.

If you don't currently have GUI supervisor access there is lots of very good information available on the "Modem Router Unlocking" forum section which will guide you through the process of obtaining the supervisor password.

Glad you got the desired result in the end.

Yes, browsers can be funny, I like Firefox, my default browser but keep Pale Moon as a reserve, very similar interface, as some of my on line banking sites and RAC site won't work properly with FF.

The 1312-B10A although getting very old now is still a very well respected modem and performs very well on most FTTC VDSL-2 lines, I have always returned to mine for modem service.

Of course there are other opinions and every line is unique!

@LittleBitGrumpy - welcome to the forum!

There is also the superb johnson firmware, ie built by our very own user johnson, which has very helpful enhancements, including PPP MTU = 1508 bytes. This lives at https://github.com/johnson442/custom-zyxel-firmware/releases

You can build that yourself if you prefer. It was built from sources that came straight from ZyXEL.

I strongly recommend the VMG1312-B10A, when used as a modem anyway. In fact I have four of them in use live right now, set up in modem-only mode, with a separate firewall/router. Other ZyXEL models have better wireless capabilities, but then you can always use one or more separate WAPs instead, as I do. I have two WAPs in use now and the VMG1312-B10As have their wireless turned off.

Our moderator Burakkucat has one in use as a router iirc, not a mere modem, and it was on his recommendation that I chose the device in the first place.

Isn't that Mediatek based as it is T series rather than B series?

Indeed, and still remember a very negative experience with a VMG3625-T20A  :-X
