Free Powerdown Plugs and LE Light Bulbs.
« on: July 25, 2008, 10:15:32 PM »

Just been having a rummage (as you do) and see that this is still on offer  for anyone on benefits.
Got one last year but this is a new offer and is 'only one per household between April 2008 and 2011. So if you got one before it doesn't appear to matter try again.

If you are on any benefits, you can get some energy saving lightbulbs and they come with a Powerdown Adaptor. You plug your PC into one socket and things like printer and screen into the others. When you turn off you computer the plug automatically turns off the power to the accesories in the other sockets. When you start the computer it automatically turns on the others.

Just go here
https://www.eonshop.co.uk/default.aspx
click the bottom button 'Click here to find out more'
At the Checkout it asks for your e-on account no. but just leave it blank.

I also had one last year, and find it very useful on my PC system for turning off everything that needs (or could) be  be turned off when the PC is not being used.

Such as:
2 off Monitors
1 off Speaker supply
1 off USB external HDD
1 off "Cable" modem (not recomended for use on: Maxdsl or and ADSL)
1 off Router
2 off Printers

Needless to say as the PowerDown plug only has 2 auxiliary outlets a multi-gang socket is used on one of the auxiliary outlets.

After a discussion about the powerdown plugs for the PC, I have my doubts about these if you are on a maxdsl product and how the DLM will cope with the sudden and unexpected switch off of a router as it wont be able to send the "dying gasp" message.

Good idea for things like printer, monitor speakers etc though.

Broadband,
You could start a VERY long thread with a statement like that.  :'(

Kitz,
I think they are rather handy instead of turning off individual sockets, as my Orange Livebox is in another room with the second line telephone plugged in, it is not effected when I shut down the PC. I wouldn't dare turn off the Livebox and cut 'The Manager' off half way through her catching up with all the latest happenings in Canada or Australia.  ???

What's the matter with switching off at the 13amp socket on the wall ?.

On the 'family' computer in the kitchen I have an 'anti surge' 6 way extension lead with computer, monitor, printer etc. plugged in and that justs plugs into one of my 13 amp switched wall sockets.
In my computer room with 10 computers I have a similar set up but quite a few more extension leads  ;).
My router and hardware firewall and network switches run all the time.

Sometimes a wall socket is not very easy to get at.

I forget that not all houses have as many sockets as I put in when I wired this house eg. 15 in the kitchen, 10 in living room, 10 in the bedrooms etc (all switched twin sockets) .
Also when you you turn off at the socket, no power is used in any or the appliances, that device will use some power on standby, "every little helps"...

Although it was only 4 of the energy saving lamps and did not include a PowerDown adaptor.
But for free, I'm not complaining.

You could always buy (sorry for the bad language) a "ES to BC" adaptor.
Although a few years now (10) I used to sell them for about £1.50.

edit:
Like most things in life they seem to have gone up in price.
But still be worth it in the long run.

edit:
These sensor lights also look quite good.

Hi
this is my first contribution as a new member and a 'Silver surfer' as well!
re this Powerdown gismo I got one in March and upon plugging it in (correctly!) the thing blew up my computer.after contacting the makers 'Oneclick Labs' I was told this was not possible, they invited me to fill in a claim form and eventually return the unit for testing  after two months they said 'no claim' and returned what they said was my Powerdown unit. Trouble..it wasn't the original..the one I sent back rattled internally...the returned one didn't! Tried to contact E-On since it's got their logo on it but they won't reply.......anyone else had a problem? any ideas? I had to have my power unit card and graphics card changed....cost £100.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Sorry to hear that it was a fault with the eon powerdown that brought you here.
The one I received, I used it for a few weeks before Daughter decided that it would be ideal for her as the plug for all aher computer stuff was right at the back of her desk and awkward to reach.
She has now used it for several months without any problems.

Likewise sorry to hear of your problem.

I have also been using a Powerdown adaptor for I can't remember how long "maybe a year or so" without any problems, and as mentioned above I have quite a lot plugged into it.

With the one they returned, have you tried it yet and does it work?
If you have not tried it (which is quite understandable), then try it firstly on something like a table lamp where there would be minimal damage if it's still faulty (which I doubt).

I can only assume that you either had a faulty one, or it went faulty.
Or, just by chance, it was at that particular time that your PSU decided to pack-up taking the graphics card with it.

I know it's of no consolation to you, and I do really feel for your loss, but on the rare occasion I ever have to send anything away, I mark the item/s with a secret marker pen, the like used for post-coding your goods.

Did you consider the BC to ES adaptor for the energy saving lamps?

I looked at them but the fittings I have that are ES are the type that only use 'golf ball' SES bulbs and even with a SES to BC adaptor, the bulbs would stick out of the top of all three shades in one fitting and look 'daft'.

I still refuse to pay about £5 for each SES golf ball type low energy bulb. I have four x three light fittings so sixty quid is out of the question regarding saving much lecky by using them.
