News From the Wheelbarrow (November 2020)
« on: November 09, 2020, 05:18:16 PM »

After a number of months of trying, I finally caught up with Walter's wheelbarrow and so asked for a progress report on B4SH's installation of their symmetrical, Gigabit, point to point optical fibre network in the Surrey Hills.

It was a very brief update, for Walter's presence was required elsewhere, but as I understand things . . .

We’ve expanded southwards from Albury (the site of our first connections, a year ago), over Blackheath and are now well established in parts of Shamley Green. The latest, current, installation there is to bring a symmetric Gigabit service to the Wonersh & Shamley Green Primary School who, just like the schools in B4RN-land, will be given a free service by the community volunteers.

Assuming Walter can remember his account password, he may well be able to find the time to update us more fully, in the not too distant future.  :)

Earlier this evening, I received a copy the latest B4SH news update. For those interested, here is a link to the page.

Do the B4xxs have IPv4 addresses or is it all too late ? Business customers might well need them? I presume they both offer IPv6?

Do they run fibre within pipes to protect it?

I don't know the answer with respect to your IPv4 & IPv6 queries so, hopefully, Walter will reply.

Yes, all fibres are run in appropriate strength mini-ducts. I have a vague memory that, some years ago, B4RN had rat problems in one (Lancashire) location. Armoured ducts were then installed during the repair process.

(I am not sure how well the mini-ducts would survive a concerted attack by the (Skye breed of) haggis.  :-\  )

Gentlefolk,

I'm sorry I have so little time to respond on Kitz.

B4SH still has sufficient IPv4 addresses but I know plans are well advanced to implement IPv6 in B4RNland so we will also have that facility before too long.

Thankfully we have not suffered any rodent damage which usually happens in nice dry ducts.
The trick is to fill any exposed duct ends with wire wool and builders foam.

Kind regards,
Walter

I had assumed B4RN would already have working IPV6.

So did I. It’s not hard surely in this day and age. Good for them for getting some IPv4 space early on.
