Vigor 130 - Recommend a replacement?
« on: October 28, 2020, 09:43:24 PM »

So I believe I am in the market to replace my Vigor 130. I am under the impression its not going to last much longer, its started to do some peculiar things. This morning I awoke to no internet and upon investigation I saw my Vigor 130 had no lights, as if someone pulled the power. I figured it might be the power, so I decided to swap out the plug for something with the same Voltage and Amps. It powered back up and I thought that was the end of it, until perhaps 10 minutes ago when my internet went off again.

No lights again. So I am under the impression that the modem is indeed dying. I could easily buy another Vigor 130 but I felt like it might be best to come here for some recommendations. I have noticed that my line tends to prefer chipsets like that found in the Vigor 130. Anything different and it either results in a lower sync or lots of line errors resulting in DLM freaking out.

Also, I was never able to configure the Vigor 130 to talk through my Orbi so I can monitor line stats. Having a new modem which makes it easy to do that (without the head scratch) would be nice. Thanks.

Doesn’t the HG612 use a Broadcom chipset? I ask this as I own one and I’m sure I stopped using mine for that exact reason.

There are two versions from what I recall?

I use the ZyXEL VMG 1312-B10A as a modem; got mine from ebay. I use our own Johnson’s software in it, which is strongly recommended if you are going to use it as a modem only, as it allows you to have PPPoEoE MTU 1508 and has other enhanced functions.

If you want to get detailed stats then you'll want a Broadcom based modem, but it sounds like you've had issues with those?
If you can go Broadcom then I'd either go with @Weavers recommendation, or for a lower price there are plenty of Zyxel VMG8324-B10A or VMG8924-B10A available on eBay. All of these are modem/routers but can easily be used in bridge mode if you only want the modem part.
HG612s are decent too but are getting pretty old now.

The Draytek 130 is a Lantiq chipset VRX268 according to people who have opened them up, the Netgear DM200 has a Lantiq VRX220 which is more recent.

There's not much else that is just a VDSL modem

You may look at the Vigor 165 or 166 (the latter is also g.fast compatible)

IDNet recommend the Comtrend VR3030 and according to this thread, it has a BCM63168 chipset.

I was looking at both of those, but I saw something about them being Intel chipsets? I couldn't find much information on them, at least my Google searches turned up dry.

Yes unfortunately, in the past I've used broadcom based modems with mixed success. The only broadcom based device I am aware I had no issues with was the BT Smart Hub (BT Hub 6) back when I had BT. I'd get a speed of 74Mbs and no line issues. If I could find a router with the same chipset or similar that would be fantastic. (When I say router I mean modem or router I can throw into bridge mode)

Intel purchased Lantiq in February 2015

Ahh I see, that would explain that. I kept looking for the word lantiq being mentioned. I'll take more of a look at the new vigor modems and potentially some broadcom routers that are similar to the chipset in the BT Smart Hub.

Interesting, i'll probably end up going for the Vigor 166. I'll see if I can find some reviews of it.

I'm still potentially interested in broadcom if I can find the chipset used in the Smart Hub (BT Hub 6) used else where as said above thats the only broadcom based device thats worked really well on my line.

I found my old TG799vn V2 laying about my room. I cannot recall what kind of sync I got when using it.

It uses broadcom from what I remember, i've decided to take the top off and take a picture of the inside. Wondering if anyone here can make sense of potentially what chipset for certain? I suspect the model will either be under the heatsink or the EMI shield/s? How do I go about removing them, they seem pretty well stuck on. I'd rather not attempt to pull on them and damage anything.

Also, any ideas what these "buttons" do? I've circled them in the picture.

image attached below

EDIT: Here is the link - https://ibb.co/nLjFpnt

Double EDIT: I took the risk and managed to get the heatsink off without breaking anything  :P The chip is a bcm63268
