v6 or v7
« on: July 23, 2008, 09:41:24 PM »

Hi, I`m in the market for a new router at the moment and have pretty much decided on the Speedtouch 585. Do people have any thoughts on whether v6 or v7 is the better buy? Bizarrely v7 is actually cheaper than v6 for some strange reason.

I've had some experience of the v7 (including its buggy firmware, which tempered my initially favourable impression), discussed in threads on DSLZone and here on kitz.

The v6 is getting pretty hard to get hold of new, and as I discovered a few months ago, at least one supplier is shipping v7 to fulfil orders for v6.

('BNIB' offers on e-bay tend to be ISP-locked versions, so changing the firmware is a major hassle, possibly involving opening up the casing and using a JTAG to program the router via its internal serial interface.)

Hope this helps

The v6 became very popular because of its ability to DMT tweak.
Unfortunately ST blocked the ability in v7 :/

The new firmware for the V7's is getting better and the abilty to get a hold of this information is getting easier. If you can get a v6 then great. If not then a v7 will be the next choice.
