Which ISPs block and or filter
« on: October 04, 2020, 05:55:56 PM »

If I'm not mistaken the ISPs are obliged by law to block/filter some websites follwing the Internet Watch Foundation guidance, is that correct?

But I also recall the not all the ISPs have to do that, and if so, where can I find the list of the ISPs that don't filter the Internet ?

Tia.

Its only the major ISPs such as BT, TalkTalk, Sky, VM, Plusnet, EE, Vodafone and possibly Zen who apply the IWF filter. None of the smaller ISPs do.

Don't believe Zen do.

Every ISP filters to some extent due to court orders. This is a legal requirement.

I think only the big 6 block much of the high court ordered piracy/copyright stuff.
At 1 point those 6 ISP's were BT, Virgin Media, Sky Broadband, Plusnet, TalkTalk and EE).

Zen don't block sites on the high court blocking list.

The courts deemed it too costly for smaller ISP's to have to block.
Originally only ISP's with over 400,000 subscribers (the big 5 at the time?) had to apply the high court block lists but that's likely changed a bit over the years.

I helped the neighbour switch to Zen to bypass the iptv blocking that was going on a couple seasons ago during premier League matches.

AA doesn’t block, they have made a big point out of it. https://www.aa.net.uk/broadband/real-internet/

I'm currently with IDnet and doubt they block (not that I'm trying to get to things that would be blocked).

I'm moving to a new build flat at the end of the month and will have access to FTTP so have been looking at some of the costs. The likes of IDnet become a little bit harder to justify costs for the 300/500 packages vs the mainstream providers (paying for the VDSL package with IDnet now at £46pm and that jumps to £66pm for the 300mbit package).

I use Zen and most if not all websites listed as blocked by the bigger ISPs are not blocked by Zen.

Some info here: https://wiki.451unavailable.org.uk/wiki/Main_Page

Nice find, really extensive too as you can go right down to the individual domains and it will tell you which ISPs were compelled to block it.

It links to https://www.blocked.org.uk/check/live and oh look which ISP supports that!  ;)

Also fascinating to look at potential false-positives https://www.blocked.org.uk/reported-sites/Plusnet
