We've activated BT Web Protect for you!
« on: September 30, 2020, 12:07:05 AM »

I got an email earlier from BT saying 'We've activated BT Web Protect for you'.

I went to the website and there is now a Security button and indeed BT Web Protect is on.

I used to turn Web Protect off on the hub instantly because it had difficulty with non-computer devices. BT must now be moving everything to their website.

Is there any advantage to leaving this on? Or is it just going to sit there tracking every website I go too? I mean I don't want my rubber chicken fetish to become public  :-X (joking  ;D )

I very much doubt it.

Probably.  :-\

As a matter of principle I would never use any ISP "give-away" equipment.

Web Protect seems to be a system which warns you if you are browsing a suspicious site (based on https://www.bt.com/help/security/learn-about-bt-web-protect)

It's Smart Setup I disable on my BT hubs as some devices won't connect otherwise.

Don't web browsers support that themselves these days anyway?

I ended up turning it off.

It is weird that they would just send me an email telling me they've activated it. I'm thinking they must have done this for a lot of people.

I've always had it turned off on the hub. I guess they are moving some options to the website.

The only saving grace is at least the button isn't hidden like the WIFI Fon function which they have now hidden on the MyBT website control panel.

It is now being activated as default, you have to opt out, whereas previously you needed to opt in if you wanted it.
