Forum Update - 20/08/2020
« on: August 20, 2020, 02:27:44 AM »

I've applied some updates to the forum, one of which for security and GDPR reasons may automatically log out users.
If you have had to re-login today then this will be why.   Thanks for your co-operation :)

Anyone else having issues with the forum lagging more since the update?

It still lagged before, but it seems more frequent now.

Basically very often when I click a link or make a post, it sits there for several seconds twiddling its thumbs.

Preliminary checks seems to be it may be when the connection goes over Zen, I've limited the forum traffic to only go over Plusnet and not seen it happen since.

I load-balance/round-robin (as this is also my gaming PC so Steam downloads can saturate both connections), thus why it sometimes was fine and other times would hang.  Its just odd how it mostly is fine, I wonder where along the Zen route its getting stuck?

afaik nothing in the update should affect performance.

Previously I had an add-on modification which dealt with GDPR and registration but now its all integrated within the SMF core.
So it was a case of uninstalling the mod before updating SMF to the latest version.

Checking the page loading in debugging I notice Google ads are loading with the forum and that wastes a second of load time.  I've never seen a single advert on the forum though.  Loading doubleclick.net and googlesyndication.com is taking up 99% of the page load time, when the page DOESN'T stall. (though I am aware Googles services are asychronous so do not slow the page down much if not displaying anything)

I also see a 500 internal server error from https://kitz.co.uk/files/jump2/bnrscript.js

I am aware that the jumpto in the banner script needs re-writing which was discussed in another thread.  This is different to the tapatalk issue.   As mentioned in the other thread about the banner script several weeks ago, I really am not in a position right now to be able to do any coding.

What I haven't publicly mentioned is that a bad fall resulted in several broken bones and I've recently learnt the hard way that a badly broken humerus is not quite the same as a broken arm and takes many months to mend.  As I've been in a brace and my right arm strapped to my chest for the past few months I'm not even able to wash/dress/brush hair myself and still need daily help to do those 'simple' tasks,  so any coding will have to wait I'm afraid.    I'm waiting to see the nuero consultant at another hospital..  and am also on an 'urgent' list for surgery that I'm expecting any day now.

I've tried to keep up with the really important stuff and security updates but I'm afraid anything cosmetic and mail is miles behind.  The more observant will notice I've only just started to be able to use capitals this past week and have months of physio ahead.   That said I don't the banner script is related to this as its been out of action for a few months.   Please bear with me when it comes to the banner script which needs a total re-write.

I am now regularly experiencing a degree of lag -- but only when posting to a forum thread. All other actions appear to be normal.
