BT FTTC Modem choices
« on: August 19, 2020, 05:51:02 PM »

I've been using a Billion 8800NL for most of the time on BT Infinity FTTC. It's starting to show its age with the struggling wireless especially when more devices are added and those devices are on a different floor. The Smart Hub 6 has better wireless (obviously) but it appears like the routing isn't near as good, almost like the chip inside it can't deal with torrents at even half my line speed.

I've decided it might be a decent idea to just get the Unifi Dream Machine and not worry about crappy routing and I'm guessing that the wireless inside it is atleast equal to the Smart Hub 6.

This has led me to realise I need a separate modem. I've looked around and identified that I'm on an ECI cabinet. I've seen talk of HG612 Zyxel and Draytek. I just don't know what I should get and if it really matters.

HG612 and Zyxel contain a Broadcom DSL chipset as does the Huawei cabinet.

The DrayTek modem contain a Lantiq Chipset as does the ECI cabinets.

Matching the DSL chipset vendor in the modem with the chipset in the cabinet might seem reasonable...?
