Banding or something else ?
« on: August 04, 2020, 02:07:33 PM »

My first post, but I have followed the forum for a while...

My HW set up, is a HG612 modem (running the SP08 firmware)  connected to a huawei cab approximate 1,877m from the exchange.
I have the QOS turned off on the modem as I have QOS enabled on ubiquity ER-X router which connects via  PPPOE to NowTV's Fab Fibre service

(I have just changed 10+ days ago) from an ECI modem, so as to get the line stats more easily.

When i first connected the HG612 my line stats were:

Max:    Upstream rate = 7969 Kbps, Downstream rate = 45012 Kbps
Bearer: 0, Upstream rate = 7969 Kbps, Downstream rate = 32399 Kbps
                Down            Up
SNR (dB):        10.4            6.2
Attn(dB):        21.6            0.0
Pwr(dBm):        11.8            3.5

About week later after a re-sync they changed to

Max:   Upstream rate = 6950 Kbps, Downstream rate = 45888 Kbps
Bearer:   0, Upstream rate = 6950 Kbps, Downstream rate = 32399 Kbps

due to resync retrain reason 1 which I assume is DLM intervention?

      Down      Up
SNR (dB):    10.9       6.1
Attn(dB):    21.6       0.0
Pwr(dBm):    11.9       2.0

GIMP is active.

My full current stats are as follows:

I am new to reading these diagnostics, so my question is the downstream rate (32399) due to Banding by the ISP or due to DLM on my line ?
My ISP advertise an "average" of 36000 Kbps and my line is capable of 45064 so I am thinking banding, however the small drop downstream rate after the re-sync and cahnge to the pwr value makes me think DLM.

Essentially, I am just trying to figure out what the stats are telling me, any guidance the gurus can provide would me much appreciated.

Your ISP has no control over the sync speeds, they are negotiated by your modem and the DSLAM in the FTTC cabinet but can also be overridden by the Openreach DLM system.

Your downstream is banded at 32.399 Mbps, the clues are it did not change after the resync, the actual sync speeds are the Bearer 0 figures, the Max values are calculated and not actual connection speeds and the SNRM at 10.4 dB is above the normal default of 6dB.  If the banding was removed you should get a good increase in speed, and as G.Inp is active that could in time reduce the SNRM to 3dB so you could well reach the full 40Mbps that is available on the lower tier Fab Fibre service.

The problem is to remove the banding you have to contact NowTV, who then have to request a DLM reset from Openreach, best of luck finding someone in support who understands what needs to be done. :)

Thanks RealAleMadrid that has confirmed my assumptions.
I am already trying to get nowtv to request the rest.

Well it looks like I have been lucky and my DLM reset request has been auctioned, as my stats have improved slightly

Quickly reviewing things --

Before the DLM reset.

Max:   Upstream rate = 6950 Kbps, Downstream rate = 45888 Kbps
Bearer:   0, Upstream rate = 6950 Kbps, Downstream rate = 32399 Kbps
Bearer:   1, Upstream rate = 0 Kbps, Downstream rate = 0 Kbps
Link Power State:   L0
Mode:         VDSL2 Annex B
VDSL2 Profile:      Profile 17a
TPS-TC:         PTM Mode(0x0)
Trellis:      U:ON /D:ON
Line Status:      No Defect
Training Status:   Showtime
              Down      Up
SNR (dB):    10.9       6.1
Attn(dB):    21.6       0.0
Pwr(dBm):    11.9       2.0

After the DLM reset.

Max:   Upstream rate = 6917 Kbps, Downstream rate = 45300 Kbps
Bearer:   0, Upstream rate = 6917 Kbps, Downstream rate = 39999 Kbps
Bearer:   1, Upstream rate = 0 Kbps, Downstream rate = 0 Kbps
Link Power State:   L0
Mode:         VDSL2 Annex B
VDSL2 Profile:      Profile 17a
TPS-TC:         PTM Mode(0x0)
Trellis:      U:ON /D:ON
Line Status:      No Defect
Training Status:   Showtime
              Down      Up
SNR (dB):     8.7       5.9
Attn(dB):    21.6       0.0
Pwr(dBm):    12.2       1.7

We can now see that your service is using the Openreach 40/10 Mbps product and it is hitting the upper limit in the DS direction.
