HG612 3B unlocked - incorrect GUI login !?
« on: December 13, 2016, 09:55:00 PM »

Hello all,

I've got a HG612 3B and just unlocked it with the following firmware following the Kitz guide:
bcm96368MVWG_fs_kernel_HG612V100R001C01B030SP08_webgui

...then got it working fine with my Asus router over PPPoE - no problems.

Now, I've plugged my computer back into LAN2 port of the HG612. I see the WebUI on 192.168.1.1 but my username/password is refused. I did change the password away from the default and am pretty sure I am typing it correctly.

Essentially please, how do I reset the WebUI password?
I've tried the Long Reset and nothing seems to happen. Also tried reflashing.

I can login fine over telnet using the default user/pass admin/admin

TIA

Welcome to the Kitz forum.  :)

You seem to have a puzzling problem.  :-\  I don't have a precise answer for you but I will suggest that you try the following --
  • Power down the HG612 so that the DSLAM sees the modem's dying gasp rather then just disconnecting the patch lead to the external network.
  • Disconnect all leads (other than the PSU) from the HG612.
  • Re-apply power to the HG612 and allow it to stabilise.
  • Whilst the previous step is taking place, check for and delete any browser cookies for the HG612 that may be present.
  • Clear the browser's cache.
  • Push and keep the reset button held for 20 - 30 seconds.
  • Allow the HG612 to reinitialise and leave it alone for, say, 5 minutes.
  • Connect the LAN2 port directly to your computer.
  • From the CLI, check that telnet access is possible with the admin/admin default credentials.
  • Terminate the telnet session.
  • Open your web-browser and access the default 192.168.1.1 IPv4 address.
  • Attempt to login with the admin/admin default credentials.

Followed your entire list very carefully and with patience. Still cannot login via the web interface :(

What else can I try?

I've seen this a few times with different HG612s and clearing the browser cache has fixed it every time. No idea why!

It's very frustrating. I'm at the point now where I can't use my DSL service because I cannot login to re-configure the modem!

Have you tried using a different browser to login (assuming one is available)?
If you're on Win10 both Edge and Internet Explorer are installed and they have different caches.

It also might be worth trying Ctrl+F5 once at the login page as this should reload it afresh ignoring any cached version.

Good luck.

Thanks. Yes, I've tried everything: different browsers, multiple refreshes, different laptops, setting different static IPs, etc.

Should reflashing the firmware with the same or another unlocked one (or different version?) reset the password to defaults?

A full factory reset should restore the defaults. See http://www.academia.edu/10313190/Unlocked_Huawei_HG612_3B_web_interface_access_issues_solved_

Thanks. I had tried that before posting here. The modem seems to do nothing after holding the Reset button - no reboot or anything.

What could I be doing wrong?

Did you try default user/pass at the GUI too?

Also - try from a different browser (firefox, chrome, opera, etc)

I had a look around the firmware, seems there is a user level account too user/user , will not give you admin rights but atleast would prove you can get is as some user to the GUI - worked for me.

Also - admin account when using telnet is a different account than the admin account in the GUI do their passwords can differ

Thanks all. Really appreciate all the help.

I've given up and just ordered a Draytek for next day delivery. Can't have this unreliable access situation for something I basically depend on.

If anyone wants my HG612 modem - I will post to it you for free.

This was a great shout. I changed my admin password to a strong one with a # and % symbol, which promptly blocked me from logging in. Reflashing the firmware seemed to keep all custom config including routes and password - I assume it didn't flash as the version was the same?

The fix (after trying and failing to persist changes to curcfg.xml manually)
  • Log in to web as user/user
  • Goto Maintenance > Device
  • Click "Restore Default Settings"
