Landline is more reliable but VoIP has a lot of advantages in that its potentially higher quality, is portable (you can connect to it from anywhere with Internet) and is easier to integrate with modern technology.

I currently have both, I recently got a VoIP number to use as my office line, I would say Alex is exactly right.

A couple of other points :
  • For most people VoIP only saves money if you don't need a landline (unless you make a lot of international calls)
  • Some phone services struggle with VoIP (some premium numbers don't work)
  • VoIP is a pain to set up and get working reliably (in my experience)
  • VoIP devices are relatively cheap and you can easily adapt conventional phones
  • If you have broadband and want additional lines and phone numbers then VoIP does this well

Yup me too when he posted another vague question yesterday about voip (in the site section of all places).

I moved it and posted a warning that if he started posting links or wasting member time then the post would be deleted.  Later on I noticed he'd added a link in his profile plus another member noticed that he has written about voip elsewhere....  at which point I binned the other post and reported him.

Reason this post still remains is that 1) members took time to answer his first question so unfair to delete their posts too and 2) I leave SFS audit trails to help other forum owners who participate in SFS.
