Another recommendation for Merlin's firmware from me.

If you are sticking Merlin on it I recommend you don't do lots of configuration before you do.
It's good practice to perform a factory reset after loading the Merlin firmware.
Then do any configuration changes, it saves doing everything twice.

Changed my modem VMG1312-B10A tonight with a spare to rule everything out. Strange thing is the modem had forgotten the admin password and couldn't log in. So I telnet in with Supervisor password and ran dumpmdm to a file and it was in the file the correct password for admin but still wouldn't login just got incorrect username or password.

So I logged into the gui with Supervisor password which worked and went to users and deleted the admin user, then added the admin user back with a firefox generated password and now I can login as admin. Very strange it has just been sitting on a shelf with the other backup.

AC68U is due tomorrow.

Well it arrived and seems a solid bit of kit. Just done a basic config and the firmware updated automatically. Now in testing.

The Trend Micro AIProtection identified DSLStats as a Telnet threat, wont be using that methinks or at least not the portion of AIProtection that detects DSLStats as a threat.

Well the 68U has been up for 1 day 8 hours and hasn't dropped PPP session once. Wifi is also pretty stable, I also noticed on one of the firmware updates

ASUS RT-AC68U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.385.20490
- Improved connection stability.
- Optimized CPU utilization.
- Fixed some UI bugs.
- Fixed login bugs.

Maybe the 1200G just hasn't caught up with the above fixes. Liking the extras as well like Traffic Analyser and AI Protection.
