Hi Guys,

I've an Asus dsl ac68u used as a router only with a Zyxel Vmg 1312 in bridge mode and I keep getting the Upnp event process notify connection timed out for devices being used.

I was on using my pc at the time this message popped up in the logs,I thought this was only if a device was idle?

Is something wrong or is this normal?

Do you have something like Norton or other Internet security software installed?

From some quick Googling it sounds like this means the router is unable to talk to the PC over SSDP but it shouldn't generally be an issue.

Well the reason I've looked at the logs in the first place is I've been having problems with ping spikes and packet loss for over 12 months now.

I've had the line checked by Bt and they say nothings wrong,the problem is worse when someone is streaming but get it even if no streaming is going on.

All the devices that have this are connected via ethernet cable,my set up is the Zyxel modem -router-and then a switch upstairs so more devices can be connected via ethernet.

So I saw the message come up when I was on the pc and checked the logs after getting lag and although not exactly when I was lagging saw the message about being timed out and thought it was unusual seeing as I was using the pc at the time.

I have Kaspersky Total Internet Security,if I find enable it is that just to stop the message ?

 I mean is that dropping the connection to the pc for a few seconds or is it just it can't get a message back so it thinks it's idle?

I've got the router only version (ac68u) behind a mt992 in bridge mode and I'm running John's fork of the Merlin firmware and have no messages like that in my log

I'm not 100% but I think the idea is that when uPNP requests a port opening then the router reports back to the PC over SSDP to let it know which port it opened.  So it should only impact things that need port forwarding via uPNP, probably not your issue unless its in games.

Still trying to get to the bottom of my lag problem I've got my Zyxel in bridge mode to the Asus dsl ac 68u and I followed the guide that's on this forum.

Apart from setting up the Zyxel to view stats,the guide says to use 2 ethernet cables but I can't because I need all the ports on the router.

So I saw on a forum somewhere (can't remember where now)to set the modem like I've shown in the attachment I've added.

Trying to find a solution to my ping spikes/ lag I saw a thread about double nat,I thought I was fine because I'd placed the Zyxel in bridge mode.

The thread said you can check for double nat by doing a tracert and if the first to ips are 192 or 172 you have double nat and that's what I'm getting.

Have I double nat and if so how do I put it right ?

Your WAN settings are correct for a 1 cable setup with an Asus router if the modem address is 192.168.2.1. I have the same setup as you except my ZyXel is at 192.168.2.10. I have just done a tracert and dont get a double hop. Are you sure the ZyXel is in bridge?

My modem is 192.168.2.1

You haven't got double NAT, 192.168.1.1 is your router and 172.16.12.224 is the BT BRAS.

If you haven't already I recommend setting up a ThinkBroadband BroadBand Quality Monitor.

You need to enable respond to ping on wan in the firewall settings.

It will ping your connection once a second, every second and display the result in an easy to read graph. Great for diagnosing issues with latency.
