Thomas goes crackers
« on: August 21, 2020, 03:43:44 PM »

After several years, Thomas has finally discovered what the huge floor-to-ceiling cat pole in the bedroom used by all the other cats is for. This enormous thing has a rope coating for climbing and scratching, platforms, and cat beds that are very comfortable- Thomas has discovered that these are fine for sleeping in for many hours. We have termed the cat beds that are on the pole ‘Yorkshire puddings’. All our cats use this monster apparatus and when Thomas is up there no one looks worried about his presence - they don’t stare at him and he doesn’t stare down at them. There is another such pole downstairs - can’t remember if it’s just two, or more in total.

The hilarious thing now is that when Thomas is in the cat bed he starts to claw the pole and when he gets into the high Yorkshire pudding he chases his own tail - first time we’ve seen him doing this, He gets ‘red hot’ playful at times, this we already know, and Janet has the required sense of ‘self-preservation’ needed to avoid serious bodily injury when he has been breakdancing on the floor, but going after his own tail is something new; a wholly new behaviour. The other cats just look at him like he is going bonkers/crackers etc., which he of course is, and they stay well out of it. Janet is really worried that the cat pole is going to tip over; I try to reassure her reasoning that the centre of mass of the thing is sufficiently far away from the outer edges of the unit’s base so that it won’t actually tip, but, mind you, it’s not by much. I think we could always fix it by putting a larger base onto it. It is supposed to be possible to attach the pole to the ceiling in some sort of half-baked way but the pole is in fact not tall enough for this to work, it doesn’t reach, being about 4-5" too short. We would have to fit some kind of extension tube on to it to increase the length of the whole thing - sounds very fiddly

I will try and get a photo of him in action because it is thoroughly ridiculous, however catching him at the right time will be tricky. Could get SLR and iPhone set up in readiness in bed because bedtime, at around 20:00-21:00 is one popular time.

The relationship between him and the other cats continues to improve with one very unfortunate exception; Thomas has started to beat up Beileag who is eleven years old now, I forget when her birthday is. Beileag and Buidheag’s birthdays were both in spring of 2009. Thomas has chased Beileag out of the room twice recently with lots of squealing and a generally terrifying racket.

I await a photograph of your resident rodent operative, in crazy mode.

The resident rodent operative caught a baby rat in the garage again; garage which has now been taken over more for storing straw and donkey food than cars; any food is now kept in metal bins so as to frustrate the rats which has helped, that coupled with Thomas’ lethal presence. Then hens lay eggs in straw there every day now, instead of in the tack room of the donkey stable.
