Does anyone here use x2go?
« on: October 18, 2020, 10:49:57 PM »

Hello everyone.

I frequently help my dad do stuff with his computer. At the minute, we use RealVNC. This was something I chose when my dad's computer was still running Windows 7 home. It's OK, but I'd prefer something where we don't rely on a third party to make the connection.

My plan is to setup an SSH server on dad's Debian/XFCE box which I am fairly happy. I am a bit nervous about setting up port forwarding and exposing this to the outside world, but I think that's my paranoia - the connection is passwordless, there's no way to connect as root and the only IP address that can connect is mine or those inside his home network.

I've been pleased with it so far. Much less laggy than RealVNC. But before I go further, are there better products than x2go I should check out? It seems OK so far, but if there's something better, I'd love to hear about it.

There's Apache Guacamole: https://guacamole.apache.org/

Probably the best free open source I have used so far.

Interesting! What do you like about it?

From the (very scant) reading I've done so far, it feels like overkill. I only access one desktop from one other computer. But if there is some killer feature, I'd be interested.

I use TigerVNC purely and simply because its provided with the distro so one less third-party repository to mess things up.

I don't need to worry about encryption as if I'm away from home I login to my network over OpenVPN.
