https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery

It’s always interesting to consult Wikipedia.   But interesting too, to note that the page has been edited 14 times in the past two weeks.

For me that’s one of the problem with ‘facts’ nowadays... they seem so transient.

Meh whatever. Times change, language changes. It doesn't matter.

I’d no idea that ‘Meh’ was a word, but I see that it may be.  I live and learn.   :D

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Meh

I’ll probably choose not to use  ‘meh’.  Equally, I’ll probably choose to continue using ‘master/slave‘.

As long as nobody tries to force me to use ‘meh’, or tries to force me not to use ‘master/slave’ then I agree, let’s live and let live.  :)

With which the grumpy, old, black cat agrees.  :)

it actually does matter when it appears that people are fixating on fixing things that aren't issues in the first place.
does the BLM crusade really care if github uses the term "master" in software development? does it really care if an episode of fawlty towers had a joke about the war?
those two examples show just how stupid this is getting.

It really doesn't matter. Things always have a period of overreaction followed by some thought and an adjustment back to sanity.

Either way there are far more important things to consider and, even if the names are changed for the longer haul, people will get over it in fairly short order.

If they ban multithreaded computing where a primary thread delegates tasks to a series of secondary threads in a hierarchy as they must all be equal then that gets more scary.

Either way there is always the overreaction then the adjustment back to a more moderate position. Always has been and always will be.

It really doesn't matter.

And there was me thinking this thread was about master, sorry primary and secondary sockets not working.

So true.

i'm not sure there ever is "adjustment back".
it's mostly the "oh well we've done it now so let's just leave it that way" type of response to any overreaction.

For those who choose to stop using master/slave, quite a lot of thought is probably merited in selecting alternative terms that are equally as concise and meaningful.  And there is unlikely to be any single answer that can be applied to all instances.

As an example, I've seen descriptions of electrical apparatus where two terms are used in a single text with complete clarity, but completely different meanings -  'master/slave' to denote control, and 'primary/secondary' to describe transformer windings.   Global substitution of the former with the latter would probably not be in the general category of 'good things'.

Being so aggressively abrasive really doesn't help make your case.

There are more important things going on right now and throughout history there have been overreactions followed by corrections.

Likewise our language has changed many, many times and will continue to. There are many phrases from my formative years that 99% of people wouldn't dream of using now.

Just my opinion, but an evidence-based one. Instead of master/slave how about parent/child, trunk/branch, primary/secondary, I'm sure people better with synonyms than I can come up with something.

Github can use whatever terms they like. They are owned by a huge corporation. Their cash, their platform, their rules.

as our PM has said yesterday - Focus on substance of racism and less on symbols.
plenty of people doing the symbolic, but with no substance.

it's equivalent of "i can't be racist i have black friends".
