Alternatives to the HG612?
« on: May 26, 2020, 04:25:38 PM »

Hi,

I was thinking of replacing my H612 with a different modem. I would wondering what are the alternatives to it that aren't made by Huawei and that work with DSLStats.
I'm looking for a modem only and not a combo unit.

I would recommend a ZyXEL VMG8324-B10 in bridged mode.

You have to set up a interface group to access the modem though.

Or use a second NIC & cable to access the stats on 192.168.1.1

What's the difference between the A and D variants of the VMG1312-B10?

The Zyxel VMG1312-B10A has the BCM 63168 chipset while the VMG1312-B10D has the BCM 63381: the 'A's also tends to have the internal noise filter, which is why they are more expensive.

It seems that the BCM63381 is designed for budget based modems, but I would let the techies of this forum to comment further...

Do I need the filter when I already have the Openreach faceplate?
How much of a performance degradation will I get for going with the D instead of the A?

We cannot answer that, on some lines it makes an improvement, on other lines it does nothing.  But yes, its an improvement over the faceplate alone.

The filter on the faceplate is only there to filter the broadband signal from the telephone. It does nothing to the Broadband line which is a straight through connection. The filter in the Zyxel may reduce noise on the Broadband line which is a good thing. As for performance degradation it's not possible to quantify  what difference there could be. All lines can behave in different ways.

Thanks for the info!
I can't seem to find any VNG1312-B10As or VMG8324-B10s at the moment but I did find a VMG8924-B10A, is this a model to avoid or is this a suitable alternative to the previously mentioned models?

The VMG8924-B10A is very similar to the VMG8324-B10A, I think it is just the WiFi that is different so it is a good alternative, I believe the  modem part of the circuitry is the same. I have one myself but have never actually used it on the line, just keeping it as a replacement in case my Huawei Hg612 gives up. ;D

The VMG8924-B10A and the VMG8324-B10A are identical except the VMG8924-B10A has 2.4GHz and 5GHz AC WiFi and the VMG8324-B10A only has 2.4GHz WiFi.

So you got the better model.

Billion 8800nl v1 are very good all be it  bit old now and can be picked up cheaply. I currently use the zyxel vmg 3925-b10b in bridge. Very stable. Easy to fully unlock if you want to get the supervisor password. On my eci line the 8324 would always lose ds snr over time.
