Previous Pandemic 1919
« on: May 12, 2020, 12:26:23 AM »

Protecting the family cat in 1919. Taken in Ireland during the previous great pandemic. Janet says that how they got the cat to wear the facemask is beyond her.

Photoshop would be my guess.

The cat’s mask does seem to follow every contour of the cat’s face.   That’s what makes think it is a ‘painted on’ mask, rather than a real mask.

That said, even I am right, the photo could still be completely authentic.   In 1919, the easiest way to paint a mask onto a cat in a photograph may have been to paint it onto the cat before the photograph was taken. :D

oddly enough i have seen recent photos of cats wearing face masks during covid-19.   i too wondered how they managed to keep them on the cat.

iirc there was one cat wearing a regular surgical mask with eye holes in..  and another where the cat was being walked on a leash that had a mask on.   think they may have been taken in either china or hong kong at about the time when they discovered that cats could test positive for covid-19.

Would they need holes for the whiskers as well as the eyes?

ps whilst searching for the ones id seen a few weeks ago, i also stumbled across this from 1918  which gives a little more info about the photo in weavers original post

again not the most reputable of rags, but if someone wants to dig deeper they may be able to if they have time.   it appears the photo belongs to a museum.

Their reputation has just soared for me as a result of that link.   Far more scientifically interesting than the BBC’s endless droning on about PPE, testing capacity, and nonsensical, deliberately misleading, attempts to ‘score’ the UK against other countries.

Daily Mail for me, tyen, going forwards. :D
