ZyXEL VMG1312-B10A and Linksys Velop Mesh System Problem
« on: May 11, 2020, 12:42:32 AM »

Recently having issues with this modem.
I am using this modem connected to my Linksys Velop mesh system for around 2yrs and no issues

Recently roughly every week my mesh system drops the internet and wont come on even if I restart the mesh system. Only way it will pick up internet is if I completely reset the mesh system to factory and setup again or if I restart the modem. I have ethernet devices connected to the modem and they run fine.

Also when this problem occurs I have Ring security products and the live view function wont work, but I can view recorded events and still receive notifications.

Spoke with Linksys and they are saying its something to do with the modem.

Stuck on what it could be as this has only started happening past month

It also has the latest firmware on it : V1.00(AAJZ.17)C0

also the settings are same as link as I followed it to setup

Hmm . . .

Are you using the VMG1312-B10A just as a modem bridge? Or as a modem/router/firewall/switch/WAP/etc?

For those, like me, who have no knowledge of a "Linksys Velop mesh system" would you please give a brief description of what it is and how it is connected to the VMG1312-B10A.

Spoke with Linksys and they are saying its something to do with the modem.

To use a phrase based on what Mandy Rice-Davies said, whilst being cross-examined at the trial of Stephen Ward, "Well they would, wouldn't they?"

Did Linksys actually say what they believe is the problem?

I am using it as a routing mode as I am using the ethernet ports to connect some devices, with wifi off as the linksys velop is handling the wifi

Linksys velop is basically a 3 node satellite system instead of having 1 router. So I have 1 node on each floor

so from the modem I have 1 ethernet into the linksys velop and the other node connect to it via wifi.

the other ethernet ports on the modem are connect to my netgear switch and pc

Does the Velop do routing or only act as a mesh access point system?

Its kinda baffling that even the official website doesn't seem to mention this.

The velop mesh does routing too. But iv had it running like this for 2yrs now and no issue
I just had the same issue again. Just switched the zyxel off and connected the bt hub back and swithed wifi off as the mesh is running the wifi

I don’t know why all of a sudden im getting this problem. No settings have been touched. Example is if i go to my ring device on my phone it shows me the recordings but not live view.

When i got into velop settings it shows internet is connected

If the ethernet connected devices on the Zyxel are still working when this happens then perhaps the Linksys is losing its IP address and can't renew it for some reason.
Have you updated the firmware on either device recently as as you say it's odd that its been fine for two years and now this is happening.
Another possible is a clash of IP addresses in your system somewhere - does the Linksys have a fixed IP or are you relying on DHCP to allocate it one?

The zyxel had the latest firmware since I purchased it

The linksys firmware was update November last year

It could be ip losing/clashing ips. But if this was the case would some things still work?

And linksys is relying on dhcp for ip.

I would get it all working again and then set the Zyxel to always allocate the LinkSys the same IP address and see how you go.

So just set a static ip for thr linksys? And linksys gives ip address to wireless devices via dhcp?

Will that affect the wifi devices that connect to the linksys?

Re-starting/rebooting the VMG1312-B10A could induce the Velop Mesh to cooperate one again. That does not imply the problem is with the VMG1312-B10A, it could just as well be the Velop Mesh system.

I was going to ask if all devices connected to the VMG1312-B10A have static IP addresses or if they are assigned addresses by the -B10A's DHCP server. If the latter then I wonder if, after a period of time, the Velop Mesh system is failing to ask for a lease renewal.

One simple test would be to leave everything as it has been configured for the past two years and, when the Velop Mesh system fails, just unplug the Ethernet cable connecting it to the the VMG1312-B10A. Wait for 10 - 20 seconds and reconnect the Ethernet cable. If the Velop Mesh system begins to work once again then that would be a big hint pointing towards the Linksys system.

Thanks thats a good thing to try. So if it is doing as what your are saying then what would the problem be?

At this point, anything would just be speculation. When there are new facts to consider then we'll have something concrete to work upon.

I really don't want to pre-judge anything but if all the other devices which are connected, via the Ethernet ports, to the VMG1312-B10A are operating without fault then I would be pointing the "paw" of accusation in the direction of the Linksys Velop Mesh system.

No, neither. I remember the event from what was reported at the time.
