Centre for Great Apes
« on: May 10, 2020, 04:46:07 PM »

My wife supports the Centre for Great Apes. They’ve just had an accidental but delightful baby orang-utan. The most beautiful thing I’ve seen in a long while, apart from my dear wife herself that is, of course.

I have such a huge thing for orang-utans and gorillas. I don’t think we could cope with additional creatures here at Torr Gorm. I suspect that primates might pull the cats’ tails too. Something tells me it wouldn’t work out. There were three cats on top of Janet last night - Beileag, Somhairle and Pangur Bàn and in the daytime I sometimes share the bed with Ciaran as well as several cats. There’s perhaps not enough room on our bed for a non-Homo Sapiens great ape too.

Look into the eyes and you can see the intelligence.

Yes their kindred intelligence shines back at us, it’s as if there’s some capability within our brains that permits us to recognise intelligence despite superficial differences.

I would like to look into the legal situation in certain territories where non Homo-sapiens hominids have been afforded human rights. I’m interested in the right to be well cared for and not to be murdered. With full human rights that would mean no slavery I would think?

I think that the Centre for Great Apes doesn’t take on Gorillas or Bonobos, haven’t seen any mention of them. There are three Orang species now known, genus Pongo. I’d like to ask the centre what their population is. The 2017-identified Orang-Utan species Pongo Tapanuliensis is estimated to be critically endangered, down to around 800 individuals remaining only.
