Switched to HG612, very slow
« on: April 21, 2020, 08:59:48 AM »

I am on Vodafone VDSL. Using the AIO I was getting speedtest.net speeds of 28 down, 4 up. I switched to an HG612 Bridged and Unifi USG a few days ago, I’m connected fine but the speeds are now 18 down, 0.5 up.

I’ve disabled qos on the modem, and tried adjusting the mtu on the router, neither really made a difference. I rebooted the modem and router a handful of times yesterday - now I’m worried my constant restarts have dropped the speed even more, speedetest is this morning only getting 12mpbs!

Can anyone help? should I try the AIO again to compare?

[Moderator edited to fix the AOI -> AIO typo.]

Hi

The speeds you have have given, is that the sync rate from the HG612 or speed tests?

Is the HG612 unlocked, can you get at the stats?

jelv - Yes I updated the firmware, I've not got graphed stats yet - trying to figure out the USG to connect the modem via single cable.

Phil - Its speedtest.

I can't remember exactly the sync rate on the Vodafone Huawei AIO, but it was something around 32000/4500. I've attached a screengrab of the wan stats on the HG612 (25000 down, 600 up).

I wondered if the 0 SNRm upstream was a glitch, or is that casusing it to only get 614kbps - or why its so so low compared to the AIO. The downstream is also ~7000 lower. Note that the picture attached was from yesterday, before my (speedtest) speeds have apparently dropped even further to 12mbps this morning.

The speedtest results from my previous post are from my phone, on the speedtest.net app. I figured it was a consistent way to measure - wifi is from a Unifi AP (was previously plugged into the AIO, now direct to the USG).

SNR 24!

As a minimum you need to make sure you don't reboot/disconnect the modem to see if the DLM relents and lets you sync at a higher speed.

The stats from the GUI are incorrect as always.

So where does one get the correct stats from? The stats shown by the GUI on my HG612 are identical to those shown on the stats tab of DSLstats and the in telnet data.

J0hn - also have the same question as jelv, but anyway here's the stats from telnet just now:

Quote
xdslcmd: ADSL driver and PHY status

Last initialization procedure status:   0
Max:    Upstream rate = 614 Kbps, Downstream rate = 20272 Kbps
Bearer: 0, Upstream rate = 614 Kbps, Downstream rate = 21002 Kbps
Bearer: 1, Upstream rate = 0 Kbps, Downstream rate = 0 Kbps

Medley Phase (Final) Band Plan
US: (7,32)
DS: (33,859) (1216,1823)
                  VDSL Port Details               Upstream                Downstream
Attainable Net Data Rate:             614 kbps              20272 kbps
Actual Aggregate Tx Power:            10.5 dBm               11.5 dBm
====================================================================================
        VDSL Band Status                U0              U1              U2              U3              U4              D1              D2              D3
  Line Attenuation(dB):  24.5     N/A     N/A     N/A     N/A    18.8    50.9    72.2
Signal Attenuation(dB):  24.5     N/A     N/A     N/A     N/A    28.7    50.1     N/A

                 TX Power(dBm):  10.5     N/A     N/A     N/A     N/A    9.5     7.3      N/A

As you can see the down sync has dropped from 25000 yesterday afternoon to 20000 - I suspect because of my 2 restarts (only one intentional! oops - however one upside is I have learnt a LOT more about dsl in the last few days, with lockdown giving me a lot more time!)

Jelv - would the resync be a matter of days....weeks... just wondering how long I should monitor before swapping back to the AIO or other Modem?

Your the only person I know with a correct webui then.
Correct stats can be obtained via telnet.

Can you post the output of xdslcmd info --stats

As far as I recall, it's only the error values which are mixed up in the HG612 GUI.

From the limited stats posted from telnet commands I can already see line attenuation is wrong. Upstream SNRM is obviously wrong.

I'll be amazed if the downstream SNRM is correct at 24dB. D1 band is 6.1dB with D2 and D3 not in use.

Do you have any idea why the telnet is so wrong?!

The stats you posted just now are correct.
It's the modems web interface that is very wrong.

Your downstream SNRM was showing the line attenuation figure.
Line attenuation was showing the output power.
All the error figures look incorrect in the WebUI also.

Output power and sync rate/attainable rate are the only correct figures.

The answer to your initial question is yes, I would put the AIO unit from your ISP back on the line.
Much higher upstream sync and a good bit higher downstream.

Don't reconnect too often as the line can get capped/banded by the DLM.

Thank you j0hn. Is there nothing I can do about the modem, besides waiting and hoping the dlm resyncs my line? - I switched to this from the Vodafone AIO as I wanted to use the USG (and unifi ecosystem), but the vodafone router cannot be put into bridge mode - I would have double nat if using two routers.

I picked a 3rd party router in order to better manage firewall rules & vlans as I have various networks i need fine control an ISP AIO wont handle. I (perhaps foolishly) bought the HG612 as it was dirt cheap!

Possible this modem is faulty? Should a get a Vigor 130, or other, instead?

Thanks for your help.
